Any details besides the paper issue? Is the form incorrect, and specifically how so? Yes. Look at the patterns they use, then look closely at the typical finished project. Then look at a real bit of armour. The lines are off, the design is off, and doesn't look right. Frankly, it's muchly along the...

Well, yeah, sensei, I know your answers... but I was hoping to get ... well ... another informed point of view. I know that is very unJapanese of me. But ... well... I hope you won't be too disappointed. Colour me dismayed by the sudden Return Of Effingham LOL! Sorry. I'll go back to Virginia. Seri...

How about the very first line from those "Governing Documents"? Sorry, that's intellectual dishonesty. Quote one line from the document supporting your view, while ignoring all the other lines -- like those in a post above yours -- pointing out the whole gamut of what is allowed. You can't quote ou...

The Kabuto, the skirt on them seems to flare out quite widely. I would have thought that when moving the head this would cause a substantial gap for swords to enter in SCA combat? Is this case, and if so how did you overcome it? Also on many pictures I have seen, the skirt is laced...how does this ...

But they sure don't look it.

And also, I just did a flex test with one. Bent it over an inch down, and no snap or warp -- it just popped back into shape. Metal ones won't do that. :)

I just dropped Date-dono a note to ask. I know that he's been busy what with the move and all, but I hope he's getting back into it. If he is, you can add his name to my list of people who make nice grape-protectors. If he's not, it's a hell of a loss. He's quite talented, and has a good eye. (Oh, h...

Kozane are here! Bwa ha ha!!

Just had to gloat. I'm sitting here holding a box that just arrived from Noble Plastics. There are ten pounds of kozane in it. And they are SHINY. And black. And pretty. And... oh, excuse me. I think I have to go clean up now. Seriously, this is going to be sweet. I'm going to be putting together a ...

Conveniently, I found it the other day while straightening out the desk. I think I have to go visit the local post office and see what they have to say about it.

Y'know, there's something perversely elegant about clunky helmets like those in the Maciejowski Bible. That's a pretty grape-case, Halby. Damn, I really like that. It's days like this that I really want to develop an earlier period persona -- but I just can't afford a proper hauberk to make it work....

What is your opinion on the kabuto over at Apprentice Works Armory? I generally don't like to say detrimental things about another armourer, but since you ask... You know, you're right -- M'sieur d'Antioche DOES make very good kabuto. From all the SCA armourers whose kabuto I've seen, only a few have the "Effingham seal of Japroval": Morgan d'Antioche, Mykaru, Mac, and Clang (breaking the "M" dominance), and one other fellow whose name I don't know (dammit)....

BTW, pass the word to those interested in Japanese armour, and let it be a subtle hint: when I want someone else to make something for me, the one I call is Mykaru.

Dale: That's another reason that they used tomegawa on the armour. The lacing doesn't flex all over the place, stretch, and rub. Your knots wouldn't undo with a solid do 'cause they wouldn't move. Historically, they would double the lace back in on itself and glue the crap out of it -- basically, it...

I don't think that would be a fair judgement. I'm a Laurel, a Pelican, and a baron. Not exactly "low ranking."...

Not bad, Dale. One of the better mogami-dô that I've seen, actually. The only frustration is that there's no "flat" photo of the dô splayed out. The angle used for the photo of the dô lieing there doesn't let me see the detail I'd need to see -- but it looks like your wakiita are a bit shor...

I'm guessing the proportions of the scales may be less-than-perfect for my body shape.. Nope. I designed them already a bit longer to fit modern Western bods. I've seen two. They were very rare, and look rather goofy. They were part of sets of armour that were entirely kikkô. Very weird.

There are basically two types of kote: (1) the type you put on before the rest of the armour, and (2) the type you put on after. The latter are more common in the later periods. They tend to be rather abbreviated in terms of fabric (they're not really bulky), and they attach to the watagami (shoulde...
