Re: No Sword Fighting on a Navy Base

Actually, the Army Cheif of Staff has made this week his intention known to restore the Patrol Cap to use with ACUs. The Beret will only be used with the "Blues" or Army Service Uniform. It's always a nice thing (why is it so rare?) when the upper echelon does something regarding the unif...

Well, that's brilliant. Has no one in the upper echelons though of how stoopid that is? Why do sailors on a ship need CAMO?

Re: New to SCA - Requesting advice on choosing armor

Don't think of armour as 'pieces'. Think of it as a 'system'. Those pieces are meant to work together. Look at complete suits. Pulling one piece from here and one piece from there means you're going to redneck engineer something, with mixed results. Our ancestors already did all that testing for yo...

I wanted to say this the first time with the other thread, but... dammit... You're not TRANSLATING to futhark. Futhark is not a language. It's a writing system. The Latin alphabet is not a language -- it is a writing system. English is a language. Norse is a language. Danish is a language. You don't...

Well, Mark, I can't help but think -- that's a lot of people who are "lucky" -- or maybe they're just the people who actually are willing to do the extra time to wash and dry it, so they let their hair grow. In Japan, long hair was the typical thing for women -- when unbound, waist length ...

For what it's worth: in terms of all of the medieval images we see of men with shoulder-length hair - I was once told by a dermatologist that most people's hair, if left uncut, only grows to their shoulders before it naturally falls out. (Apologies if this info turns out to be incorrect; I'm simply...

So then the guy with the "bye" gets to go into the next round UNTIRED -- unlike all his opponents.

That is, after all, the reason for fighting the bye. So that *everyone* has fought a bout.

Agreed.

I think the problem you're going to face her is that this is a VERY specific type of sword. If it were more "medieval" -- typically something we'd find in Oakshott or something Norse or Saxon -- I think it would be snapped up. Thus the risk of *deep* specialization. ;)

The other problem is that the palm section is really soft leather. Some folks once borrowed my kendo kote to use at their fighter practice, and when I got them back three months later, the palms were shredded -- literally -- and almost non-existent. I was not pleased.
