Re: Decline of Islam?

Well, Kufic itself was the most generally prevalent at the time; the specialized Geometric version was less so. I am willing to admit that I have never been able to read some of the inscriptions at all: But in a plain, block-printing style it would have been easy enough. I'm one who loves some of t...

Re: Decline of Islam?

@ Alric: he's bloviating and playing the troll by insisting that everybody have his discussion, rather than letting people get on with answering the question at hand. Historical philosophy as he's expressing it does NOT explain why this decline occurs in the 13th or 14th century (as opposed to the ...

The interesting thing (to me) is that many of these seem to display horizontal wrinkling across the front just above the waist -- it looks like the front may not be so much "shortened" in some cases as rolled up over the belt.

I have split off the stuff which (in my omniscient view) goes outside of HR and into PC. Obviously there's some room for overlap (politics occasional has some impact on history), but that's the way it is. Please keep this thread historical, and use the other thread (there's a link to the moved thre...

Re: Decline of Islam?

I'm watching a series of documentaries called "Civilization: Is the West History?" that addresses the question of what made "the West" dominant in the world, and whether that dominance is on the wane. One episode spent a lot of time talking about Turkey, and pointed out that in t...

They won't wonder if all they can find is "death metal." ;)

I'm fascinated by the concept of musical forensics. It's just so COOL -- like opening a tiny crack into a window allowing us to experience the lives of our distant ancestors.

The world's OLDEST song

Now you can hear for yourself the world's oldest recorded song. A tablet found at Ugarit, and dating to the 13th century B.C. , contains in the upper portion the text of Hurrian hymn. In the lower portion (highlighted in red) it contains a series of numbers and technical terms that have been interpr...

No.

Not only is that a "shouldn't" from a stylistic perspective, it's also from a structural one.

Modern kendo dô are made with fiberglass facings -- which one good shot from a rattan sword will up-fuck in a spectacular way.

Bob, that's not gold, that's a muddy orange red. OP had to get that heraldry is a GRAPHIC art, and the colors are clear, clean, and sharply distinct. Blue is BLUE. Red is RED. There is no "muddy orange-red."
