An early machine with an external motor will do what you want.
My wife has several machines, but for thick work like padded cotes etc she uses a mid 1960 singer.

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?
My kit is full of plastic and I think it looks decent as I shaped it with a certain aesthetic in mind. No one has once assumed any of it was plastic, I have even been snobbishly referred to as "Mr Authenticity" and "Battle Tank" as folks assumed it was all from "authentic: m...

If you quit, the asses win
I have other hobbies I enjoy as well, and I continue to train and practice, just not in an SCA environment.
Armouring for a living certainly does not allow me to "quit" the SCA, but time away from SCA rattan fighting has helped give me new perspective.

Re: unsolicited advice on fighting.
I watched a fine fighter practice dry up as a result of a member of the Chiv constantly stopping every fight over and over to voice opinions. He would claim material learned from other knights was invalid, would constantly voice opinions on how to fight weapon forms he himself did not use and would ...

Re: Tinning steel items
I helped Craig build his tin pot, it was simple to build requiring nicrom wire for the elements, soft brick and a temp control unit. He bought the temp control unit on e-bay, I do not recall if he wound his own elements or purchased kiln elements. We used a router to cut the channels in the soft bri...

Re: Inspired by other craftsmen
An easy way around this is to have an really good idea of what the original looked like. I don't understand copying. My style is certainly informed by others. But, when I look at a helmet from a great armourer I have yet to think 'I want that.' I'll typically think 'That is awesome, I think I would...

Re: Inspired by other craftsmen
I just recently released several tsubas for sale at foxknife.com. None of the designs are original. In every case, the original is at least 300 years old and was copied by a lot of people before I copied them. I guess I could say the hole in the center is original, but that sounds a bit lame to me....

There is not much you can do about it. I have design features I developed to get certain helm styles onto the SCA field that were unique to my business. Several SCA armourers have duplicated the design almost exactly and greatly undercut my price. It sucks to be me. There are folks who make exact co...

I have been half swording for about as long as I have been fighting.
I have the entire edge marked, no ricasso.
I ask my opponent before the match if they mind, some do, some dont.

I have a similar style for heavy list under construction.
I would love to paint it but for an in stock piece color choice would be better left to the owner.

I use a rubbermaid "brute" trashcan for my cote of plates. Its a reasonable thickness, easy to find, is a medium gray in color, is already curved and is one of the few trashcans with no stiffening ribs etc molded into it. Just a nice smooth cylinder so there is little waste. This combined ...

My inspiration came from wanting a dog or cat as a child and ending up with chickens because my mother was practical, as well as Brave Sir Robin from Python, and Sir Brian Du Bois-Gilbert from the 1952 film adaptation of Ivanhoe, and the fearless nature of Roosters Green and red are my fav colors. h...

I don't fare as well against the monster shield folks.
I also don't do much thrusting and use a 6 ft poll
