Your right Owen it can defeat the purpose, but its not a general rule for for me that i give up the limb, its just something that i may do on occasion.

i dont tend to give up a limb when i take an opponents, but if i enter a list where wounds are retained ill give up what ever is needed so the fight starts with a level playing field. If you choose your selections carefully you will find that many items compliment each other well and you will be able to portray diff pperiods by mixing and matching diff armour.
A maille shirt goes along way.

i have an otters den set with the lobed pommel, the mounting for this set is excellent, very rugged, this is a very heavy set though. ive yet to hit any one with it so well see if i can still deliver a powerfull blow with it.

i think a kettle with a bevor is a great idea, its one of my fav looks, sallets with bevors are common enough, and look cool, but you rarly see the other
A deep kettle with a tall bevor would likely only require a single bar, possibly 2.
