Without the bargrill, it is essentially a barbute. While there is some overlap between the bascinets and barbutes (bascibutes, perhaps?), this is more of a traditional bascinet with more coverage in the cheek/face area. I need to run off to a meeting.... However, I will try to edit this post a bit ...
For period turnshoes I suggest: m Dru is a nice guy. He has a good collection of extant shoes and a great understanding of their construction. The revival shoes are in the style of a turn shoe... not turn shoes, from my understanding. Depends on what you are looking for, I would guess. Personally, I...
No, to my knowledge it is not representative of anything even remotely resembling a mid-late 14th century bascinet visor. Decent bowl, though. Pretty art... but not historical. Purely modern "sport armour". A "wouldn't this be cool...." hat. What is displayed on pg. 52 of Arms and Armour of the Medi...
Please see the following auction for authentic tinned brigandine nails: m Yes, these are the nails from Craig Nadler's original order way back when. They were ~$20.00 per lb + shipping, if memory serves correctly. Here is your chance to get a rare and hard to find item for your accurate brigandine!

In response to the water wheel hammers: I found a book in my library called "Armour" (or maybe "Armor") with sketches depicting a period water powered shop. Granted, I found this book in the children's section, but it still seems to make sense. They had a sketch of a large wooden sledge hammer powe...
Why is it that when you start what you think is a rare thing, you suddenly notice all the others that are there, or everyone else starts doing it too? This is the 5th helm I have seen based of that onion top since I started mine. It is a gorgeous helm.... Don't feel bad... it is worse with a Harley...
Thomas James Hayman wrote:cool, when are the journals due to be mailed?
The Journal publication has been pushed off a month... to the end of May. We are waiting for one last article to be finalized... and some custom photographs for one of the articles.
This will be an issue not to miss... definitely worth the wait.
The ARS is proud to announce a scheduled live chat with Mr. Pierre Terjanian, Associate Curator at the Philadelphia Art Museum. Mr. Terjanian is a scheduled speaker at the 1st Annual Conference of the Armour Research Society . ARS will also be publishing an excellent paper written by Mr. Terjanian o...
But if you started the helmet with a water powered hammer, and got the bulk of it done with that.... Mass orders were filled before the use of water-powered hammers. I do not think you would have seen the use of water powered hammers outside of simple hammering, ie. in actual shaping of material, u...
Why did it take the conical shape? Not all hounskuls are conical... so they did not take a strictly conical form. A12 in Vienna... is a triangular cross section, for example. There are at least three examples of this visor style in exsitence, assuming that they are authentic, it is at least one sty...
I would be prone to believe that the hounskul evolved through the development of the glancing surface. For more information on the development of the glancing surface in 14th century armour... please reference the ARS Journal when it is released in the coming weeks. The Glancing Surface and its Effe...

Agreed... the SCA is not a bad thing. Portraying the SCA as a source of academic knowledge can be.
I was even given an invite to come see them personally when I'm over there in October for my honeymoon.... It took a while to digest THAT e-mail this morning.... Stephan You will find that most museums are exceptionally nice to the public. As long as you approach with a good understanding of the su...
Any idea as to whether or not German-born visors had those mouth openings? I think the one in the Cluny is Northern Italian/Southern German in origin... it has openings (spiracula?).. but whether this is a bascinet visor could, most likely, be succesfully debated either way. As well as whether the ...
It's like the spate of posts over time refering to various individual pieces of armour in the armoury of the castle of Churburg as "Churnberg" - where the heck did that one come from? This particular one burns my bottom.... From what I have been able to dig up, the source of the term Churnberg/Cher...
We are striving to CREATE the bar that all others will be measured against.... so no fear that the content and quality will be worthwhile. On a side note..... I don't understand something... please help me... A book on making SCA armour that contains nothing above and beyond what you can find on fre...
What are the expenses? If you ask- you never know who might be able to defray production costs - for instance, my mom teaches radio/tv/film production at NIU. They have both Avid and Premiere, I have experience editing digitally on premiere, etc. I'm sure there are folks out there willing to pitch ...
You are in somewhat of a quandry.... The cheaper you make it, the more you will sell... to a point, of course. At $50 a piece, you may sell 200....but at $25 a piece, you may sell 500. No quandry, really. Given what the market will easily support... they will most likely NOT be priced below $50.00....
Signo wrote:I will pay the money if after each step the piece is showed to the camera by a very nice girl in bikini (if we can't make without bikini (just to save money obviously))
Marco,
Siete pazzo! Dovete trovare un compagno femminile, rapidamente.
We will try desperately to make it region free. If not, this would be a good reason for you to move to America, Ralph. On second thought... stay there... we have plans for you! Release date to be determined . It would have to be prior to Sept timeframe... given that the hat would need to be complete...
As previously hinted in another thread... plans are currently under discussion for a comprehensive video on raising a hat. The actual hat in question (in the style of the Schwabish-Gmund sallet w/o bevor) will be created by Patrick Thaden for a raffle (yes, you could own this wonderous piece of mode...
