Oxy/Acetylene can be acquired at any local welding supply store. You can normally rent or buy tanks and equipment.

In the short term, it's probably about the same...but as a weatherproofing system it does work well. Gold or silver would need to be polished sure, but rust isn't a factor on a non-ferrous metal, only looking yucky. I'm not sure that it would be easier short term, but it adds protective value long ...

But maintenance would still have to be preformed. The fancy jewlry and expensive sports car would need service. I would think gilding, tinning, or silvering would simply be practical for that purpose, but wealth decided WHICH method you used. And even though you are doing the maintenance, you're se...

.... what are your references to a 17 layer arming doublet/coat in the 1400's?

I see 17 layers mentioned and am unfamiliar with anything that would have been that thick.

I think you can throw the ease of maintenance right out.... If you could afford fancy guilded armour.... you would not be concerned about the maintenance of the piece as you would not be performing the maintenance. Like wearing fancy jewelry and driving an expensive car while wearing Armani suits to...

Did you check the rating on it? Most of the rotary shears I have seen are only rated up to ~18ga mild, I believe. That could be the cause of the gapping... if you cut metal too thick/hard for the tool. You could probably look at the make/model and contact the manufacturer.... they could tell you the...

What kind of setup works well for hot working a helm? The propane forges I've been looking at at Centaur forge don't appear to have enough internal volume. Can the same setup be used for heat treating? Essentially- can you heat the whole piece at once? Oxy-Acetylene and a rosebud tip. Works great. ...

You can find a number of peter finer catalogues for legitimate sale here:

And they are often available on E-bay. As are catalogs for Sotheby's, Christies and Hermann-Historica, I believe. Probably other auction houses that deal in arms and armour as well.
