Galfrid: I'm not convinced that in either of those effigies the plates are actually on the outside of the jupon. Steve Looking at those pics (and others like them), there is a clear overlap! That could be the artist, but there seems to be a theme as there are many different pieces that share that c...

Question: What makes you think the first statue is wearing a CoP rather then just maile and a tabard? Sean I could pull out a few others when I get home, the notable thing on them I'm trying to point out is that when the dags are on the shoulders, there does not seem to be the rivet/plate line on t...

Cote or no Cote over the CoP?
From: m Cote or no cote over the CoP? Either? The end of the CoP has either acorn or bulbus like dags. I've seen these depicted on the over-garment especially at the shoulder. Thoughts? This is one of the pics I was thinking of: (Dags on the ...

The last guy I saw pole dancing in armor was in a Byzantine kit... AND I ROCKED IT! Back to the initial post, (1) Most Coat of Plates I've seen in reproduction and the existent pieces seem to end above the hip. This guy and his bud's seem to end mid thigh. Is there consensus, or are both acceptable...

Nik's Halloween
OK, we had to re-stage pics with my 5 y/o's Halloween costume because they didn't come out so well. Here's his "kit". He loved it and people really dug it. He got "extra" candy at a lot of houses. [img]http://www.ho...

That's a very good question. There are a great many depictions of the VB in artwork spanning the centuries, but in is never mentioned directly in any of the period military manuals. Possibly it was one of the many assimilations of Persian technology (as was the Sassanid helm and concept of the catap...

As your source was created in the 1700's, there is an out of period aspect to the art. However, there is prescient to that depiction in Christian Orthodox art throughout the end of the Eastern Roman Empire and after. Something else to note, look at the neck on Saint Merkourios' vest. The part folded...

It is quite similar to Byzantine art, so I'm going to guess that it's depictions of lamellar or possibly chain corsoletts. At some point, the Herculean Knot (chest sash), becomes the Varangian Bra (chest strap), often but not always depicted with shoulder straps. It gets fancier in art as time goes ...
