Has anyone ever tried to use a spear in this manner?
I have and it is not pretty.
It also impedes you from switching hands.

If we went to a spear + shield ruling, it would simply mean an influx of plastic shields. Oh, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

No. That rule exists as to ballance the game. So, we accept it as an imperfect restriction understanding it is for the greater good of the over all game. (bam!) (and I fight a lot of spear in melee, so I'm used to being shot every few min). Which is why most Byzantine spearmen carried shields. Of co...

Possible, hence my mentioning it.
But as I said, I get shot

...a lot

and this was different.
Acceptable.

But I still think that "face only" would be the panacea.

They struck in a manner that I was "pleased" to leave the field, as I did not feel that I was compromising.

They struck truer then anything I've every been hit with (and I fight a lot of spear in melee, so I'm used to being shot every few min).

IMHO, they are superior.

Then again, as Adam stated, he fires from a different bow than most.

I'd say most CA kills happen 10-15 meters.

However comma

The majority of CA crossbows do not resemble a real crossbow.
(rate of fire, size, etc).
Hence the disparity.

I mostly agree with your last post*. I was merely pointing out what an anomaly CA is to the Conventions of Combat. (*If a fighters armour makes it difficult for them to properly calibrate, they're supposed to calibrate by sound or take other means to safeguard their reputation. I know, some don't.)

NO! That helm is made in SE Asia. I've handled one. It is made for a head that is wider than it it long. It looked as if the nasal was put on the ear of the helmet bowl. I have seen people of SE Asia who's heads are flat in the front and back and longer from ear-to-ear, so I understand why they mad...

I'm not. We're not doing "war". We're doing "SCA war". You can't equate the two. Trying is folly. Though we appreciate any help in trying to find a amicable solution to the current issues that CA causes, there are many unintended consequences that your proposed solutions create. ...

In my game, the definition of armour is obvious. It would seem pretty simple to me, to rule that hidden armour does not count, nor does armour that does not look like historical armour. 1) With all due respect, we're not talking about YOUR game. 2) That would mean the marshal would now need to be a...

Armpit... Maybe you'd get a polearm, or S&S from the side, but unless they are attacking, the armpit is usually protected -- and if they are attacking, they'll likely NOT feel the bolt hit the armpit. I believe that face only fixes the problem, or at least would balance the game. I've fought in ...

My idea would be to have 'armour as worn' as the standard for archery . You do not adequately define Armour . Armour as Worn against archers would indeed reward those who encumber themselves with closed face helms, cap'a pie, etc. However, I've been thinking about the difficulties of implementing i...
