Not nearly long enough--about a month. I don't mind the expense, I just find the hassle of making the things annoying because I always feel short on time.

Review: Historic Arms and Armour
I have undertaken, as you might have read elsewhere, to improve my kit over the course of the next year. I am well into it. I have chosen to contract with Jeff Hedgecock of Historic Arms and Armour to produce an armor which is of very high quality. Though his offerings are on the costly side, and va...

By Saint George and Saint Paul, I will be right glad to discuss any matter which you deem worthy, whenever God brings us together into the same place! It would be well and worthy of renown for me to strike a blow against the Champion of Ravenslakeshire, and the squire of such a worthy man as you ser...

I think I would like a pair of well-appointed maces for exactly the purpose that you have said, namely deeds of arms. It is well to have a table laid out with a variety of matched weapons, so that any type of form can be undertaken. And maces are pretty rare weapons, in SCA combat--I just don't see ...

Thus far, I have only had it happen for the space of one blow, where all seemed so clear and apparent that my course of action was obvious, and I did what was required, and the blow landed with great authority, and then things were as they normally are. Of course, it is only in the memory that time ...

Combat is an anvil upon which better people are made. The physical trials increase one's vigor, and increase physical courage. The social trials smooth one's rough edges and refine the soul. The mental rigor required to comprehend all that is required of a good man at arms sharpens the faculties. Se...

Indeed, I could obtain a modernly-styled blank book at any bookstore, but I do not believe that it would be suitable for this use. The overall effect I desire is that the book appear to be a product of a different time. My wife has a journal, given her by her sister, that I dare not touch, but it is...

Blank Book
I require a blank book, leather-bound, for inclusion in a box which will house the Couter of Chivalry, a treasure which was first given by Sir Johannes of Atenveldt to Sir Vitus von Atzinger of the Midrealm to be given as a prize at the Summer's End Tournament in the Barony of the Flame in South Oak...

This year has the possibility of being a really different year for me. I have resolved to be more involved in deeds of arms this year, especially ransoms and service in the body of honor, being a writer and a courier of martial goodwill. Sir Vitus has set me forth on seeing a prize I had the good fo...

Placed an order for the cuisses with custom fit greaves the other day. Have to talk about the custom fan and all, and once that's under way, and in the production line, then the next big hit is soft kit--clothes, specifically. Probably the whole clothing line which I laid out in the first post. I am...

I think that for this to be useful it's got to have some tightness of era, say 20 to 50 to 100 years. I know that it can be very hard to tighten up the era pre-1000 AD, and then in the 14th to 16th centuries, it means nothing to say that you're locking down to fifty years, because things changed so ...

When we are done, the thread, "Material Culture of a Late 14th Century English Esquire" should be a quite good "PIAB." Angus, I have an Arms and Armor Henry V. The blade and hilt components are carbon steel. This is what I do: 1. Don't touch the blade. If you do, wipe as soon as possible, even if it means wiping off your oil. But NOW, don't wait. 2. Mineral oil with a bit of toilet paper. Light coat. Some folks say ...

These conditions make it easier for people to adopt greater authenticity: 1. Humility. Many people have invested a great deal of time and treasure in their error, throughout the years, and turning one's back on error which was bought dearly can be hard. 2. Books. A large library is a great help. 3. ...

What Sir Lothar says is what I mean about why you do it. Remember, Wyrmspleen, you talking about doing something against convention. People are probably inclined to attach a negative reason for it. Do not aid this natural impulse. Seek opportunities to engage in counted blow fighting, or some sort o...
