As the SCA continues to age, it is going to have to deal with the increasing need for some heavy weapons fighters to avoid the strain of fighting from their knees. And then there are others who don't mind the behourd style fighting in the SCA, but who feel that kneeling is stupid and therefore yield...

What His Grace says is what I have seen, also. Most history undergrads, when they finish, have a solid grasp on analytical writing. My undergraduate degree finished up with a Proseminar which was a mini-thesis, about thirty pages in length. This was something that I was prepared to accomplish over m...

Many folks, myself included, have invested a great deal of money, time, and effort on inappropriate efforts. This can have the unfortunate effect of investing them in their error, and sometimes makes them hardened in it. I would have preferred not to have wasted my money and time. But at least I hav...

Since His Grace has not replied, I will say what I did. It did not help me too much, but it is still what is right. My failure to take good advantage of my own advice need not be your case (I studied Japanese in the mistaken notion that I would use it in the Foreign Service). In your senior year, if...

Received a pair of brass lanterns and a pair of spaulders from Historic Enterprises yesterday. Good stuff. The design of the spaulders is very muted. Classy. They're just a teensy bit heavier than my current titanium spaulders. EDIT: Yes, they are just a little bit more substantial, at 12.4 oz each....

I agree with a lot of what's been said here. I'm not exposed to a lot of the same events that some of the folks here are, so my perspective is different. If my impolite statement drew forth the proofs that there is a body of people dedicated to understanding the neccessities of medium to high fideli...

This is a beautiful peice of work. I like the shape especially. The fact that two helmets were used in conjunction was unknown to me until quite recently. My understanding is that they are a 1300-1370 phenomenon, and in the later years, were worn with Great Haumes, for example the Pembridge style he...

When I made my first post, I had been more or less interested in how the phrase "We are Weak" with some pictures of some astounding looking sites and settings would affect people. If you're saying that the cotehardie is properly done only when draped onto the model, then I understand what you're talking about. But what you're talking about is the methods involved in shaping the material in such a way as to provide support for the bosoms and being tightly fitted, so that a mod...

I am certain to be at Blackstone Raid in Aethelmearc in April, and am seriously considering the Tournament of Chivalry on the 4th of April. The fact that some students of history study it from the context of the people represented, and some look at history firmly entrenched in their modern mode of thought always adds friction to any historical discussion. Two "kinds" of chivalry--the ideal and the practical. While the crusades don't tri...

I think some folks are a little unsuspecting of just how basic some of the basics are. Yes, yes, you don't want just anyone taking new fighters under their wing, but it's a green, green fighter that doesn't understand two or three basic direct line strokes (flat snap to head, flat snap to leg, hamme...

I'll accept some risk. There is much I don't yet understand, but here is what I think: Fighter practice is the weekly deed of arms, it's the place where people do their in-between event training. It is typically conducted in a plain, even businesslike manner, so don't expect a lot of showmanship. He...
