Handkissing or bowing over the Lady's hand is mostly a Victorian custom. Although there are medieval precedents. If you happened to be a Norman liege lord of many vassals or a high churchman (archbishop and up) you could reasonably expect to have you hand kissed by your underlings on a regular basis...

Ya, the whole "bated weapons" thing is moot in Sca combat. After all how can rattan swords be blunter? In LH the live steel is also rebated...so again the concept is moot. I suspect that your opponent was trying to be "Forsoothly" and telling you he would prefer not to give the illusion that he was ...

The real problem with modern resources for anything pictish is that they are almost exclusively drawn from Roman accounts of how the Picts lived. The Irish myth cycles and The stories of the Dalriada/Scots are full of references to Picts but very little description. The Roman accounts have typically...

Well...hmmm...the traditional way involves urine and deer brains. A lot of urine. The enzymes soften and penetrate the leather, the minerals and chemicals in urine tan the hise. The deer brains add another set of minerals and another series of enzymes. The smell is nose destroyingly strong. Most hun...

Depends on the type of combat we are engaging in. At Crown, I am likely to allow him to settle to his knees and get comfortable. In a melee I am not even going to let him hit the ground before I gakk him. In a run-of-the-mill tourney I will step in as he drops to his knees and try to kill him quickl...

Hi folks. As usual Chef is pretty much factually correct. Speaking as a Scottish-born American, I have a few observations of my own to make. The philabeg was in fact a strictly out of period thing. The short kilt was in fashion from early 17C to the rebellion of'15 and again in '45 when it was banne...

NO worries. It's a fair cop that a lot of SCA members are taught an almost institutional dislike for authority and authenticity. They are not the mainstream! My suggestion is to use a 2-1 solution of warm water and hydrogen peroxide. When you have made several applications of the peroxide mixture, then oil the hard leather t...
