I've tried many techniques: this is the best I've found. Put a garter over the top of your calf muscle. Then, hang the greave from there with leather loops. This will prevent the greave from riding down into your foot. Any other straps to keep the greave from swinging forward will then work fine.

There is a treatise caled "How a man schalle be armd" (I belive) that talkes about pieces of wool blankets being wrapped around the knees to prevent chafing. Perhaps you can use something like that sewn into the hose or even just wrapped aound the knees to proper effect. (I must admit that I have us...

How thick is the blade at the quillons? It looks like anything but an actual sword to me-though the two rings at the "hilt" look suspiciously sword-like. Also, how thick is the tang? If it is as thick as it is, I would think that it wouldn't match up with European swords. Is the quillons asymmetrica...

I'm from Calontir, too. I've been around a long time, and I have to say that while we are still respectable, in the wars I've been to in the last 5 years our effectiveness has diminished compared to the glory days in the late 80s/early 90s. I think that has a lot to do with other units adopting our ...

Take Ibuprophen at a minimum dose of 600mg every 4-6 hours. (no more than 3200 mg per day, though) Lesser doses have no anti-inflammatory action. hot soaks are great! I'd minimize the rest, though. Actually, judging from the equipment and style of the drawing, I'd be surprised if it was any earlier than c. 1400. You didn't see those bullet nosed bascinets until the turn of the century, and jupons were not common until the last quarter of the 14th century progressed. Conversely, a great helm at...

I don't think that there is any reason to think that knights never used bucklers. Bucklers were a readily carried defense, (along with single handed sword), and in a campaign I can't think that a professional warrior wouldn't carry one unless an arranged battle was iminent (after all, one of the squ...

Great thread. 1 question. What do you mean by "reenforced mail"? Most armors of the mid 14th century consisted of a gambeson, hauberk and reenforcing pieces, such as coats of plate and spaulders worn over the hauberk. This left many areas solely protected by mail. While plate armor was being develo...

Your experiments would also jibe with the accounts of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt. In the two earlier examples, there was a great deal of reenforced mail, (not plate). One may guess that the large number of casualties from archery was due to the longbow's ability to penetrate mail. Given that duri...

Mild steel is not the same as hardened steel plate armor. It is much easier to work, and unless case-hardened, will dent with sufficient force. 16 guage is REALLY easy to work. I would expect it to be just as easy to dent wth a wooden sword as it is with a plastic mallet. Denting 16 guage isn't real...

I'd keep the suit for steel fighting. There are a growing number of groups that do this, though you might have to do some traveling (like to ENGLAND). The 14th century definitely rocks! The clothes are cool-looking, but not insanely difficult to make. The armor is well-suited to SCA (and other) styles of combat, again without being insanely difficult to make. On top of that, the time period was fascinating.
