It's a matter of values.

I'd look for a used suit, ML. That will be more in your price range.

I don't know about the Laurel in question. Since she is giving the seminar-she can teach whomever she wants and ban whomever she wants. But, how does that help the Laurel in question? I would think that her motivation for teaching the class would be to help others increase the level of authenticity ...

THe fact of the matter is: other groups are already doing what we want to do. If the SCA isn't willing to allow such things under their umbrella, that doesn't mean we can't do this. It just means it won't be in the SCA. There are other groups that do SCA-style rattan combat. Markland for one, and th...

There are some disposable air-sprayers perfect for dying leather. They do the same job as an air brush, but they're a lot cheaper. Basically, it's a jar with a propellant cartridge on top of it. It's easy to fill the jar with dye, then screw on the cartridge. That's it. And, the propelland cartridge...

First off, there is no substitute for research. Having a picture from the middle ages of what you're trying to re-creat is the best and easiest way to ensure that your project will be like what they had. Before you cut into that $150 hide, I'd do some planning first. Here's a brief run-down on leath...

Why can't it be done in rattan combat? Oh, it can. Just not in the SCA, apparently. The SEM's deputy pretty much dismissed out of hand the recommendations that were proposed to be done with rattan. Basically-he didn't want to do anything to change the rules-even as add-on rules for special occasions...

Ugh. Don't do kneepads. They always look like kneepads (if they're worn outside of your leggings) and they're easy to lose. Take some black foam and cut into strips. Use spray adhesive to stick them into the inside of your knees, but be mindful to keep the strips small enough for the piece to articu...

Trevor, "Your breastplate will not go with the soupcan knees very well. There is at least one German effigy that has a one-piece cuisse/knee combination and a breastplate from about 1410, though (and a klappvisor)." I wouldn't take it up with the current SEM. Its obvious it's DOA. When fencing was brought into the SCA, they had to bring in an entirely different set of rules. Perhaps we should focus on it as an entirely different activity than heavy fighting, as the current Marshallate seems intent on treating h...

You're correct-the soupcan lknees will move your kit back to mid-14th century. Which will go along with your CoP better, for that matter. I wouldn't put mail over the legs. Personally, I would rather have plastic on the field that was covered by a period garment than non-period leather armor that wasn't covered.

Sometimes, certain pieces cannot be covered and that is understandable. I'd rather use leather than plastic for those anyday of the week.

For someone new to armoring, I'd recommend looking at armor made in the early to mid 14th century (1300-1360 a.d.). A "brigandine" is a 15th century garment, and was tailored. It takes a lot of armor know-how to pull it off. OTOH, a "Coat of Plates" may be more what you have in mind. There isn't as ...

Re: Wide Belts, Leather Bracers, and other SCA-isms?

mm.. "leather bracers" generic SCA-isms ? Context, please. Certainly we know they were used historically, in at least a couple of contexts. The lovely tooled Archer's bracer from the Mary Rose, the 14th century vambraces. Some things are, indeed, peculiar artifacts of the SCA. It does undermine the...

Checking my Osprey title "German Medieval Armies 1000-1300", I see some examples of flat-topped helmets ("Salt-shaker") and some semi-round topped helmets.
