Re: How to Register a Grievance with the Order of the Laurel
I didn't read the OP as "I want the laurels to fix this for me," as much as "This person is acting in a way unbecoming a peer and I want their order to be aware of it." I seem to be pretty outnumbered in my interpretation so I may be dead wrong. The problem is that I, as an SCA ...

Re: Bradshaw Feeling Effects of Concussions
I don't disagree with anything you have said, Your Grace. I also think we need to consider the role that genetics plays in this. Some people, perhaps Thorsten as an example (perhaps not he hasn't said) are more likely to concuss than others. Then again, some folks are also more likley to do silly da...

Re: Bradshaw Feeling Effects of Concussions
In general our equipment and weapons are very, very safe. I've only had one real brown out from SCA fighting and that was early on when I was struck with a VERY illegal polearm by a Bog Trooper. (BTW, just for those that are curious, making a 'hammer' out of a steel, foam lined thermos covered with ...

1250 is early period? Really? Half way through the High Middle Ages????

Re: Aventail WITHOUT a gorget ? is it legal?
i woul much rather take a thrusting tip to the throat than have the thrusts force delivered via a metal plate. ive done both and much prefer the latter. now if the throat/neck were weak and in great danger i would probably put a mile of padding around it but since its not i prefer the nice soft tip...

Re: I want to learn more about Polypropylene swords!
In that case has anyone figured out any nifty taping method to eliminate some of the wobble? I really didn't like the way it felt when I was hitting my pell. Maybe cutting one down to a 34" length would help some but any other ideas? The only tapping suggestion I think would help with the vibr...

Re: Kingdom Fighter numbers
Reviewing our lists from time to time makes me rather sad, because there are always people on there that have left the game, and the paperwork side of things just hasn't caught up. Of Atlantia's 818 we usually field less than 150 at Pennsic. (Not counting all the mercs and bog troopers that fight wi...

Re: I want to learn more about Polypropylene swords!
This should shock no one that knows me and how I fight, but I put a rather impressive crease (maybe two inches in length) into a 13g mild steel helm, throwing an offside against a left handed fighter. The shot landed near the forte of the sword. Not that I haven't dented metal with rattan but to be ...

Re: "The Sword in Two Hands by Brian Price" review wan
A friend of mine showed up at practice last night and we started working on Greatsword stuff. He pulled out the gauntlets he got at pennsic and has barely fought in. Why? The spring steel was totally destroyed, they had holes in the damn thing. Oh Boy. I said, "Oh no, you got them from Chivalry...

I hit hard too. And train to hit accurately. Sometimes I do miss and hit a knee, then I apoligize and we continue. Why on earth when I have tried hard to get my kit to look as medieval as possible should I alter it just because you can't throw a legal blow without a visual sign? Do you also suggest ...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
Not so fast Bryce. I never mistook nor misidentified Duke Ronald's style as Iron Chicken. Iron Chicken is where you wrap your sword arm over top of your head with the tip of the blade hanging down across the front of the shield in either the hope that your opponent will not hit you in the arm or in...

Re: Gulf Wars - Bad Experiences?
I think everyone from the Right Coast has issues at Gulf Wars at some point. I remember one of the most passionate anti-GW rants I have ever heard from Duke Cuan after a particularly fighting year. It happens. Like he said now, he enjoys it for different reasons. Every year in the winter it is cold ...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
""Iron Chicken" we are referring more to the Wilmot Style, as has been discussed by others. (High Guard, sword tip down over the front of a Closed Shield.) " That is not how I fight so since as far as I can remember we never fought I think you have a bad source. Duke Ronald Well...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
The guy on the right in this picture is in what I would call true "iron chicken": http://www.duncarraig.net/images/faq_fight1.JPG I disagree. That style seen on the right is informally called "pillbox" amoung other things. At least on the Right Coast, when we speak of "Iron...
