[bump] Well, it's the weekend before that, but hey...bring the whole family! If your wife wants to come, she can have the bedspace in my parent's trailer. I'll have my 2 yr old with me and maybe my wife. Grandma will hopefully be there to babysit a bit. Anyone remotely interested, let me know so I c...

What's with the bars? Why is the fifth one from the top about 1/2" farther in than the rest, then the bottom three jut out again? The whole helm looks kind of long to me. Seems like it's meant to ride high on your head, or the fron cheek panels are to ride low in front. It just looks "off" somehow. ...

Nice work! I think we'll have to try something like this at the armour-in!Well...maybe not an entire helm, but some form of raising work. If you carpooled with Mad Matt and came down to the southern armour-in, you'd only have to drive about 20 hrs each! http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif ---...

Friday night the 19th through Sunday the 21st. I'm not exactly sure where Cleburne is other than near DFW, but I'd guess it's about 4 hrs from you. It's 3.5 hrs from College Station, 4-4.5 from Houston area, 1.5 from Austin...etc.

You are most likely using type 304 or 316 stainless. Neither are hardenable with heat/quench, but can be annealed/stress relieved with heat. Both readily work harden, though. Both will "decompose" if heated too hot. I did some hot work with type 316. I heated it to a cherry and continued working unt...

I use a thick spun-top as a form for the bands. I dish them using a shotput, then planish them on the form. I make the fram of the helm, then dish the panels. I dish the entire panel, then flatten the side sections a hair until it fits like I want it to. Come on down to the hammer-in and I can show ...

I didn't notice you were in Austin until now. You could pretty much much pick a weekend whenever you want and bring a few people over.

Southern Armour-In

How much interest is there in a southern Armour-in? This would be held in Kerrville, TX (About 1 hr north/north west of San Antonio...kind of). The weather is kind of odd down here and there's a lot of hunting going on in the general area during November. Mid/late October would be good. Late Feb or ...

Latigo is a special type of oil tanned with waxes and such in it. It's great for straps, lacing and any outdoor (saddles) leather. It is very stout in thicker weights. If you had 7 oz latigo as a base material for a COP, you wouldn't be moving too well! If you look at full grain utility hides, these...

Wouldn't a baffle/mixing stage make the burner more efficient? My dad has a burner, but the flame seems awfully fuel rich as it comes out. Matt, Most raisin stuff can be done in a conventional oven. I'd suggest adding some figs, dates, cinnamon and nutmeg as well. Perhaps some almonds too. I used the aluminum black way back on some 6061 aluminum. It sucked. It left a rough finish and the color wasn't even. The stuff that was black, rubbed the black off onto whatever it touched.

I think the Leather Factory had some sort of belt buckle stud that some one was using once. You had to drill out the hole yourself.

How thick of metal did you start with? What's your heat source? Hoiw big of an area do you generally heat/work at once? How many hours are you at at this point? You could always just do like Hannibal and cut a 1/2" section out of his cranium. It should fit fine then http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/...

I'm on a T-1 as well, and it still is a pain to load. If you're saving them as .jpeg, save them as a quality of 1 or 2. There is no noticeable difference on pics this size and the file size drops to only 10-20kb.

Bran, I do it both ways depending on what I'm making. Some pieces of armour don't lend themselves well to one way over the other and sometimes it's convenient to start in the middle of something as opposed to edges or vise versa (easier to hold, etc). Especially for smaller parts. I use a 12 lb shot...
