This one started as 5/8" round W1 tool steel. It was forged to shape using a propane forge. The finish shape is then ground. The better you forge, the less you have to grind. The round stock aids in making this style blade. The ovalness makes it easy to get the bevels in the right spot. before the c...

The first one was about 2"..but was too short. I now have a 4" high wall, except for directly in front and behind. It's only about an inch high there so I can get long stuff across the forge center without having to build a 5" high fire! I've been taking more pics for the additional how-to pages. I'...

Guillaume, I used refractory cement on this one. This stuff is available from most on-line kiln supply stores, knifemaking shops and fireplace stores. This particular brand was called "Satanite" and is available at www.knifeandgun.com. I usually use a mix of dolomite clay (plain old cat litter) and ...

Knife and Gun finishing Supplies has Satanite. www.knifeandgun.com As for soap...yes and no. Or more like yes and "I don't know". Yes, a touch of soap in water would most definitely have catastrophic results. If I mixed the soap with oil...just enough to break up the oil, then watered it to thin out...

It's not "bent", I cut the end at 45* before welding it on. You don't have to do it, but it will increase your air flow greatly. I use a hair dryer...so I want the least amount of backpressure as possible. I'm re-doing all my pages right now. I have a lot of the links going to temp pages that don't ...

I have a couple on my site under "blades for Regia"...or something like that. You can see the hamons on them real well in addition to any weld lines and such. They all were W1, 1095, 1095-edge/1022-spine, and W1/1022. Not even a hint of warping using a 50/50 mix of penut oil and transmission fluid h...

I took it down to 800 grit and can't see any other fractures. I think it was just a bit too much when the clay fell off the forward section. This was quenched into 170*F water. True W1 can handle water pretty well. Unfortunately, modern W1 is now almost exactly like 1095, not the plain carbon/iron m...

On that particular one, I used a fine paste of pottery clay as a foundation clay. On top of that, I used a mix of dolomite clay and Satanite refractory. Satanite mix makes a really nice hamon due to it's insulating properties. It's also a bitch to get off the blade and sucks as a foundation clay (ba...

Pecan is also used in place of hickory (labeled the same, though!). The whiter wood handles are usually hickory, while the ones with a yellow tint or dark streaks are pecan. Ahh...I see now the "forged cold" statement, guess I missed it the first time. Basically, don't do it with blade steels. One, it's much more difficult to do, and it does fatigue/stress the metal causing fractures. Use your torch/forge and do it hot. You'll still get the sweep in the blade from the b...
