Cool! I really like the inside shots of these...the lack of welding lines.
I'm definitely going to need to try the raising again. I messed with it once...without the proper hammers and without the proper results!

Weatherwise, March and April are really nice. We can get a couple of the large carport style pavillions to aid with any rain sheltering needs. For SCA folk, that's also a pretty busy time with large events. I guess we can get a consensus and see what works best for everyone and what works for y'alls...

I went to finish up some knees/elbows this weekend and went to put the final crease in when I realized one of my stakes was missing. Upon further inspection..several were missing. I set up and did a forging demo at an event a week ago. I didn't notice the missing items when I left. Ahh well...I woul...

Cool, lets plan on the Spring. With a little arm twisting, Olaf(Johnson City) could probably provide the host site (we had talked about it at the last one). My parent's site has 220V and a few other improvements since last one...but is still pretty much just a flat spot in the limestone out in Kerrv...

I think there's some confusion on "rat-tail". Rat tail doesn't mean it only has a 1/4" wide tang all the way down. It just means it terminates in a narrow tapering fasion and the last portion will be narrow. This "portion" varies from brand to brand. As long as the blade/tang junction are of suffici...

There seems to be a few more persons around the boards these days from the Texas region. Any interest in getting a second armour-in together for late Fall or early Spring? We've had several de-railings in the past year in this area. There's several tons of abandoned rail out here. Of course, a 12' section bent like a pretzle is a bit difficult to move! I did find a pile of small (under 2') sections of track and other assorted rail steel things. I'll probably pick thro...

Nothing for the public to be concerned about, although I'm sure the local papers will blow it out of proportion! The press release goes out tomorrow or Friday. Heat to just above critical temp. For 1070 this is probably around 1475*F. You can put a small magnet on the steel and when it falls off, you're at critical temp. Quench in heated oil. I use a 50/50 mix of 30wt oil and transmission fluid. Heat up a bar of something and quench first to heat up your o...

A few people here have outstanding orders with me. A few things have happened here on campus that have now involved the state and federal agencies. As one of the safety officers, I've been a bit pre-occupied the last two weeks and will be through next week. Sorry for the delay and any missed emails....

Mild steel etches very slowly with ferric chloride. However, heat treated medium/high carbon steel will etch very well. Nickel silver(German silver) gets a really neat appearance. The copper etches out while the nickel is left. Etched brass can get the design buffed out easily, where the nickel silv...
