On most of them, I drill out the slot for the tang slightly undersized. Then, I heat the tang and burn it in for a close fit. Clean it out with a pipecleaner and some acetone and set using epoxy. The tang has notches to help increase the hold. There's quite a few discussions that pop up over the use...

Torr & Cedric, I added y'all to "the list". I have an email list for people interested in these. I have a really f****d up schedule these days and don't want to start doing commission work, but rather find out what most want and concentrate on that style when I have time to work on them. Price depends on style. I'd like to make about a half dozen each month in the $50-60 range. This is cheaper than what they eventually be at, but are still prototypes and such while I work out preferred metal types, designs, etc. I haven't completely decided on pricing, but will be something like the...

Ahhh...found a decent image storage place now. The blade is 1022/1095 two bar composite. These were forgewelded and manipulated to give the wavy pattern. I etched it to give a antique look and to bring out the contrast in the different metals. the wood is French walnut. It's much like the claro waln...

Even thin bands should be dished so the overlapping sections match the curvature of the helm panels. With wider bands, it's more noticeable if they don't match well. However, wider bands allow for easier fit of the panels underneath and are easier to keep square to eachother. Check out the early spa...

Not bad at all. Are you pre-fitting things using screws before riveting down? It's time consuming, but does help get everything just right before riveting. Also, it allows you to disassemble, polish, then rivet the final product and save a LOT of time on final clean-up work. Your surfaces need to be...

Anler tines are perfect for handles. They have an oval crossection and a gentle taper with a bit of a flare at the base. Elk is a good approximation of most European stag and is easy to find, easy to work, and pretty stout stuff!

First off...is it saex, or seax? It seems to get interchanged. I guess if it's Saxon, it really doesn't matter. In fact, I should spell it different everywhere I have it on my pages! Anyway, I started making some period ones. These are mild 1022 steel on the upper and 1095 or 1084 on the lower blade...

You can get a blank of 1084 high carbon steel in a size suitable for a sword for under $10. It's easy to work hot and easy to grind cold. Heat treating is pretty basic as well. knife handle material

In the process of cleaning up the house some, I found some old bags of mineralized mastadon ivory for knife handles. These aren't big enough for a full handle, but could be made into a mosaic pattern using pieces and black polyester resin as a fill/binder. I doubt I'll make a period knife from it......

I dish mine deeper only due to an "SCAism" so people can kneel easier in them. Also, the sides on my pattern come a little farther around than an original piece...also due to SCA requirements for joint protection. This style, and several variations of it, can be seen over a wide range of periods. I'...
