The IG in MIG stands for Inert Gas, just like TIG is Tungsten Inert Gas welding.
All MIG's are wire feed...but not all wire feeds are MIG

I made a pattern for one from posterboard. I never made the steel version, but the posterboard looked pretty nice. I still plan on making it eventually, and if you want an additional pattern to work with, I can mail you a copy.

For all your riveting needs....
1/8" and 3/16" are the most popular. For a riveted helm for SCA combat, they need to be steel rivets for all structural rivets.

Red Falcon used to carry them for $20 ($15 + $5 shipping), but quality/thickness varied from lot to lot and they haven't seemed to have updated their website in forever. Ron Simmons sells helm halves which are much smoother, better shaped and very good quality. They cost a bit more than spun tops, b...

K-Mart sells charcoal marketed by Martha Stewart (~$8 bag). We used it at the armour-In with good results. It burned pretty fast though. I use blacksmith's coal (bituminous coal- $10 per 50lb) which burns pretty dirty when you start it up. Makes a pretty pea-green smoke. When your metal is hot and y...

As long as you use the right rod, it shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to find a rod matched to almost every type of steel these days.
If you weld after you heat treat, you ruin the heat treating in the area welded.

I was thinking more for garb than for fighting, but if they're sturdy it would certainly go well with my planned fighting kit. I was hoping for a bit less than that, but that's comparable to what I've paid for other hand-made shoes. I'm extremely flat-footed so the hand-made shoes with the flat sole...

The seaxes will tend to run a hair cheaper since there isn't as much detail work put in the handles. However, I plan on etching/engraving a lot of the blades. Most of what I have planned for the ornate pieces will be in the 6-8" blade range. I'll be making a bunch of smaller ones over the break, but...

I find it hard to believe a reputable dealer would be auctioning off an authentic piece from the 1600's on e-bay with a starting bid of $150. It just doesn't seem right. Here's the brows for Insane Irish's helm. these are 3-steel twisted pattern welded. The first pic shows a close-up of the pattern and the second shows the overall billet.
