What type stainless are you etching with this? I've poured fairly strong HCL onto type 316 with virtually no results. I've soaked it in board etchant with similar results. How deep are you etching? Are you just getting discoloration, or are you actually getting a noticeable cut? ------------------ K...

Adding lames to that style would make for a pretty ugly, non-functional piece of armour. they work best with the leather riveted directly to the cops. There are a couple examples in the member pics pages. Gaston and Elrick have some. I have some pics on my site of legs done like this. I have the ins...

Oh yeah, one other thing....if these are some of those new files from China. I tried making some knives from them and it just didn't work. I don't know what kind of metal the file is, but it just doesn't act like "typical" steel. It seemed more like some sort of cheap version of tungsten carbide. If...

For ferric chloride, just about any recipe will work. Varnish, laquer or any paint works good. Permanent marker works well for short etching times. I use little model paints sometimes with nice results. have several fine tipped brushes for the fine detail. For a deep etch in brass that can be buffed...

I'd break it down into 100K chunks. I'd rathole one chunk and let it draw interest because I know I'm irresponsible and will blow the rest of it regardless what plans I make.. Next chunk would be se aside for the kids. I was pretty much a punk in my youth, but I had fun. If I had 100K, plus interest...

Nitric isn't bad at all. The stuff we're talking about is concentrated acid (12M-20M) about the consistency of glycerine. This is what you dilute down 1000X to get the "normal" nitric acid. If you do silver etching, you pretty much have to have it. It also works great for cleaning lint out of pipes....

A good solid ferrous material weld. I but weld from the inside until it penetrates through. A 7014, 3/32" rod in DC- at 80A is great for this. Any general purpose 60XX rod will work well also. For stainless, use a 308L at the same settings. ------------------ Krag von Berghen KragAxe Armoury Member'...

"The nitric ate and disolved the entire truck and trailer. Rubber, cast iron, aluminum, glass, wood, everything." Nitric doesn't eat glass...hence, that's why it was transported in glass containers. It doesn't dissolve rubber..it turns it crusty and brittle and reduces it to a brown goo. It would b...

Heating something up to orange then cooling in air will screw up a prior heat treatment...but it doesn't necessarily anneal it. When I anneal tool steels, I heat them up and hold them at orange for a few minutes then allow to cool very slowly. Depending what type, I may leave in the furnace or fire ...
