The problem I am having with mixed armours is that I wouldn't want to have to apply a lesser defense value to *parts* of your harness. See what I mean? All of our harnesses have plate somewhere. The Nomadic Tank is a bit of a problem, as is your gear, Owen. The N-Tank is carrying a great load of hel...

The point of posting the flyer from the first tournament is to prove that the founders wanted us to have a very inclusive persona enviroment. It really burns me up to see early period folks show up at the Pas. I don't like it. I also don't show up at the Holmgang, either. I also wouldn't show up at ...

I adore the goddamn SCA.

I was looking over Jengien's website tonight, and as I looked at the pics I realised that I didn't know a single soul in any of those photos- and yet I *DO* know those guys. I love the SCA. I love seeing guys in bad armour who are totally living the impossible! I look at these guys and the spirit of...

Owen, If I were the Knight of Honor I would turn you away. My own harness would make me ineligable. What Steve, Steiner and Murdock are wearing is what I would be looking for. I think one of the requirements should be steel leg and arm harness. I would agree to not ask questions about covered body a...

I don't remember saying I was interested in an "armour as worn" scenario- only that I wanted to exclude guys in regular SCA leather legs and arms. However, I can see how you would think that I did. Let me think about this.

It's simply a matter of letting a-holes ruin their own renown, Brennus. Yelling about it just makes people think you are an a-hole, too. You think you are the only person who notices when somebody is being a total jerk? Let them cut their own throats.

Brennus asks- >1. is Chivalry a static concept or is it a living philosophy that changes with each age? It is fluid. It is a living philosophy, but has been continually debated. We don't know what it *IS* any more than William Marshall did. There has never been a concensus. From reading Kaeuper I ga...

A long, long look in the mirror...

In Richard Kaeuper's book "Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe", Dr. Kaeuper makes the arguement that all students of chivalry -from every era- are attempting to be reformers. Chivalry is always something that needs to be re-designed, refined or razed and re-created. If you care about the whole...

Remember a couple of years ago when that young lady showed up for this tourney and thought she qualified for admission just because the tiny steel plates on the front of her brig were "made of metal". They let her fight- that had better not happen this year.

You can take any size shield you want into "battle"- it's hard to be elegant in a Grand Melee, anyway. If you are primarily a polearm fighter, why comment at all? This issue is about people who insist on carrying honking big shields into single combat. I personally think a large shield makes a fight...

You need three vambraces. A pair with wings and one with a plain wingless cop. When you decide to fight without your shield, simply switch your left vambrace.
Or, you can use a center-gripped shield, which are correct for all time periods. This eliminates the need for a "shield vambrace" set-up.
