Short Killer from Trimaris
What is the name of that short squire from Trimaris who wears red, white and blue and who uses a rectangle shield. He does a crapload of pickups at every Gulf Wars. Awesome guy.

I thought Juliet Barker made a great point during that recent Discovery program about tournaments. She said "...nobody bothered to write down how to run a tournament because it was common knowledge." or something to that effect. I think that Chef is absolutely right in saying that spears of every le...

There are enough MS illustrations of knightly sword and shield combat for me to be able to sleep at night. The chivalric literature of the time is filled with countless descriptions of such combat. The biography of Don Pero Nino and DuGuesclin as well... Were all of these descriptions and artistic r...

I have seen some very idiotic crap at Pennsic the last few years. Like the time I saw a squire throw down his bascinet in disgust while shouting "Just because a shot dents my helmet does not mean it's good!" I just walk away from idiots who can't admit that they have been hit. People get knocked dow...

People drift into "Spinal Tapping", but it doesn't happen that often. If we are talking about people who will go to any lengths to win, I would say that cultural mis-communication is the cause of alot of confusion and tension. But as for outright idiotic cheating, I have only seen non-SCA people do ...

The best fighter should win the highest praise. Prizes and praise for acts of gallantry and courtesy are great, but make sure that he who jousts the best be praised above the rest. Don't let the more accurate tournament formats become a popularity contest. Have multiple judges- one for Prowess, one ...

You know, that is a GREAT point. I just had not considered that. There are quite a few people in my group who are early Scots and Irish- I suppose I should introduce them to this type of shield as a new option. However, the second that the other fighters in my group discover that the square shield o...

Well, this is just another example of a historically fuzzy idea becoming an cool and successful SCA virus. It's no big deal, really, but I think that people should pick a time period and try to stick with the fighting gear and garb from that period. The idea of a guy with a Anglo-Saxon spangenhelm, ...

There are limits to everything. The rules for a particular type of combat are not limiting me, because I have tried to move beyond the SCA as sport combat. In fact, combat is a huge part of my SCA life, but I am trying to use the field of battle as a place to study the social mores and traditions of...

Man, there is some really hilarious stuff on this thread- some of the best I have read in a long time. My sides are killing me. It's a strange predicament- I love Ix, but I am sometimes tempted to refuse combat with Road Warrior types, just because they look so stupid- to MY EYES. It's a horrible si...

My Lord Rodrigo, may God and his angels guide your valiant hand, and give you good success in all of your knightly undertakings. I am trying very hard to get to Gulf Wars early enough to participate in your Pas d'Armes. I recieved your letter of invitation and it is beautiful and outrageously inspir...

By blocking with the basket, you are actively betraying medieval practice. We need to try to stay as close to medieval models as is convenient and safe. Actively blocking with the basket is simply bad swordsmanship. If you are trying to study swordsmanship, and not batonmanship, you should avoid blo...
