I hope all of these guys using these square shields are Picts.
This type of shield seems to be the more *rare* of the Migration era.

Dieterick, none of this matters to me. All I ask is this- if you set up across from Midrealm Royal again this year, would you please not take out a rattan sword and start beating on your display armour every five minutes? Please? I know it's part of your sales routine, but I'm begging you- please do...

Invisible armour was taken into account. If you did not have the minimum amount of plate or mail armour on your person you would not be allowed to participate. I may be King-at-arms at one or more of Ashbjorn's tournaments again this year, and I will be asking to see what is beneath tunics and other...

This is from The Murder of Charles the Good by Galbert of Bruges- 1127 "And there were many others who on the first and subsequent days of the siege had gone in for the sake of gain and money; among those was a fiery young fighter named Benkin, expert and swift in shooting arrows. He kept going arou...

(Excerpt from my forthcoming translation of The Booke of Chivalry of Melvin De Charney. This material is protected by copyright.) The SCA is no doubt afraid that wasters are an invitation for the unarmoured to start sparring, instead of doing disciplined slow work. Go to see Brian, or ARMA or Bob Charron if you want to study and play with the manual techniques- learn what you can and apply it to SCA combat where you can. It's ...

A Barrier tourney isn't neccesarily a Pas d'Armes. A counted blow format doesn't make it a Pas either. There are many types of fighting event- jousting, tourney, Emprise, Pas d' Armes, festival.

(Vitus, speaking as the representatives of the Tenans- greets Sarnac, a challenger) Well met, cousin Sarnac- may God grant you a happy time of day. Where is thy lady? Does she attend you here? Were the single-sword matches fought in "Rhysian Style"? Sir Rhys of Harlech invented the holding-the-barrier thingy, to keep his opponents from being able to get away. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif This style of fighting has never been documented from the Middle Ages. People hit harder...

I am seriously considering this concept. This MS has quite a few additional passages in it, and I am busy translating the text f...

Fighting AS sport.
There has been some great commentary on another thread about sport attitudes and harness choices- some of the best ideas that I have seen here in years. I am pretty tight with Steve Muhlberger; author of the new book Jousts and Tournaments, which was recently published by The Chivalry Bookshelf, and...

There is alot going on in this thread, much of which I have long-since grown tired of debating. I will just say this- Duke Cuan looks as accurate as any SCA fighter who does 14th century. I may be perplexed by some of the things that his Grace says, but I will defend him to the death as far as his c...

My ceremony retained very little of the traditional Midrealm wording. I was given the "last blow" with the flat of the sword across my head. I also wore the garb described in Lull. Much of the text here is taken from Christian de Pisan, Charney etc. ------ The Dubbing of Vitus Litold - Compiled by S...

Last Saturday I went three rounds at a tournament called Candlemas while wearing an eye patch. Candlemas is a pretty rough tourney, and I had to really turn on all of my other instincts to keep up. At one point, I was fighting a sitting Prince while the strap of the patch had fallen into my right ey...

The hosts of a Pas d'Armes would have no intention of forcing you to ransom your horse or armour. Ransom isn't part of the Pas- it's is part of the true Tournament. Bring *gifts* such as those Gaston has mentioned for the Tenans of the Pas, offer ransom to those who take you out of highly competitiv...
