God keep you, Sir Richard- you girded on sword in a good hour! May the angels of heaven guide your lance. Time has already started it's war upon my wretched body, but this is no matter. Whatever prowess I have shown has been dearly won by me through great sufferings and tribulation. I do not intend ...

The only disappointment I have taken away from my knighting is this. I really couldn't do an all-night vigil because the pain meds that I take in the evening knock me out completely. I had put off taking my dose until about 4am, but when I became pretty-much overcome by pain, Kara begged me to take ...

Jean Paul-
I haven't lifted very seriously for the last few years because of my long-standing shoulder problem, but after I am knighted I will probably spend a bit more time in the gym.
My best power clean was 235 pounds for five sets of five reps at about 180 pounds bodyweight.
Have fun!

Alfgeirr- What I am trying to express is the idea that much of what "stick-jock" culture represents in the SCA is actually very mediaeval in nature. It's just that some people enjoy research just as much as fighting. I continually run into SCA fighters who have studied the manuals, but who never tal...

Real combat, huh? Well I can sell you a very sharp poleaxe to use. The point I am trying to make here is that the competitive spirit is the central thing. I guess I am too busy trying to grasp the spirit of the thing itself, in an attempt to think like a 14th century knight would think. Flonzy wrote...

My Vigil and Ceremony

Well met everyone. For those interested, my knighting is to take place on Friday evening of War Week, just before the Midrealm Known World Party. The ceremony is to take place at Midrealm Royal encampment. The ceremony will probably be very quick, so make sure to get there in time. Just arrive a bit...

In his "Chivalry and Violence", Prof. Richard Kaeuper wrote... Competition- This obsession with prowess stands behind the seemingly numberless tests the chivalrous undergo in this literature to determine who is the best knight in the world. Marvelous swords can be grasped, or pulled from a stone, or...

Review-14th Century Legs by Mandrake

I have finally strapped and pointed my 14th century leg armour made by Greg Anderson of Mandrake Armoury. They are in mild steel, with deep, arch-shaped knee cops which have a single lame above and below. Fitted front greaves came with them. The fit is incredible- the greaves alone are so beautiful ...

Some people hit full power, others do not. Some people hit steel armour with full power, while holding back against leather. There are many levels of force and calibration, and Bascot knows this. http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif Bascot, I don't think that Sir Rhys is reading these boards a...

About two years ago I used these flyers to explain where the fantasy lineage comes from- many of the original members met through Tolkien Fan Clubs on University campuses. Although the date of the original text has yet to be determined, most of this facimile edition was published in England in the late 1500's. Krotchpunt Fectbuch to be published!

Great news for fans of the authentic Western Martial Arts! My years of work translating the little-known Krotchpunt fighting manual are finally coming to a close, and now the fruits of my labors will finally be available to the general reader. The entire text, as well as all of the beautiful artwork...

One of the contemporary verse accounts of the Combat of Thirty mentions shields being used in that deed of arms. Look at Oakeshott's books- there are very few longswords or huge two-handed swords that date before the end of the 1300's. The rest are single-handed weapons. Hell, a vast majority of exi...

As far as the "exercise of the sword and buckler", I think the reason we see unarmoured people "fighting" with these things is that they are not fighting, or practicing fighting techniques- they are doing targeting exercises. The buckler is a target, much like those big pads that boxing trainers wea...
