I think we are in this position, right? m (top picture) I think I passing step forward while I thrust at him low and to the left (my left). My buckler is below my sword hand and to the right. Thus my opponent's offense is severely limited while he is forced to defend the thrust with his buckler whic...

Baldar did it for Trimaris' 20th(he was the first). And then he went to Pennsic and fought a bunch of fights (ask someone else for the number). Quite a feat. Odo I heard a rumor that Brion, Michael of Bedford and a couple of other guys were all trying to have an "old dukes reign" where they all won...

So the event was a great success. We didn't have nearly as many in attendance as we hoped;about 150 in attendence, 59 heavy fighters on the field (11 teams-including two teams from Meridies), and 6 light weapons fighters (2 teams of three). But it really didn't matter in the end because everything w...

Panhandle Skirmishes
So Panhandle Skirmishes since it's beginning was supposed to have been a war between Trimaris and Meridies and/or Glenn Abhan. Well, our traditional foes have had a rough year and instead it is a fundraiser/melee tournament to benefit the Society's newest kingdom and her ravaged citizens. The plan f...

Numbers vs skill vs organization... It's a common debate. Those that are organized but not skilled tend to say organization will overcome skill. Those that prefer the heroic "tourney" style of engagement tend to say skill wins out over all. Those lacking both tend to say that numbers or spirit will ...

Which Kingdoms fall outside of the realm of normal SCA fighting though? I certainly think that there are local trends that are very odd- the no moving on the knees in Ansteorra, the lightness of the average shot in Meridies/Glenn Abhann, the shielding of the dead's eyes in Caid. Shielding of the de...

pennsic is also, by the numbers, roughly 7 times larger than gulf wars. That's a bit misleading. Pennsic has 7 times as many people in attendance, but Gulf Wars has a much higher proportion of fighters. so having a few more complaints come up is expected. i do not know of too many highly expirenced...

[b] Negative renown must flow also. Men-at-arms should be afraid that they will make an error in judgment and earn the reproach of their fellows for wrongdoing. That is is a basic tennent of the way I was raised in this game. I marveled as many new fighters do, "What do you do when someone DOESN'T ...

as I was being a punk-a$$ squire I so totally deserved it, too. After the 5th time you said "One more fight." I had to do something. Time sort of stood still for me. Once I realized that he was actually throwing his gloves of as fast as possible to help me out of my helm, it was kinda cool! Yeah, o...

Never a true "out cold" situation but several "KO's" or "Brown outs", all of which would be considered a true knockout in a boxing match (unable to stand for at least 8 seconds) and where some time was lost. I "KO'd" my wife once at fighter practice from my knees with a fairly light sword. I've drop...

If your using only fencing masks for protection and using weapons stouter than a fencing epee without knocking each other out cold, then you are not fighting "full force" by SCA definitions. We've had a lot of live steel guys come out with the impression that what they did was comparable to what we ...

I am assuming that what you meant to say is that South Downs is one of the lightest "calling" locations in the known world. I can assure you the upper level fighters from this area can hit just as hard as anywhere else, but call much lighter than most places. Odo J South Downs is argueably one of t...

I'm not sure what is scarier... I had to carry the dagger for about a year before it finally became something more than just decoration. I'd tried it years earlier with no luck and assumed it was a waste of time. Then Aveloc proved it could be done. So I'd walk around absent-mindely "quick-drawing"...

Here's another idea, though it might be a little advanced: Learn to fight and throw blows while casually walking forward. This isn't easy. Most fighters can only move forward in quick spurts and then plant to throw blows. Try forcing yourself to start walking forward no matter what happens. Don't te...

Thanks to Sir Aveloc, I started carrying a dagger years ago whenever I use any two-handed weapon. Since then it has spread quite a bit around here. Partly because every time I see a knight involved in close-quarters struggling for a way to kill his opponent after his pole has been neutralized, I alw...

Could you explain what gaffers tape, woven elect. tape or sail tape is? I've never heard of any of those (names)... Gaffers' tape is also sometimes called "camera tape". It's tougher than duct tape at roughly the same weight and it has the advantage that it can be removed without leaving nasty resi...

I believe that Logan was referring to one handed swords. I also think that frequency of practice makes a difference here too. He practices more often than I do, I think. He's also in a section of the Knowne Worlde that is known for a relatively high calibration, though that may be a myth. f I live ...

Yeah Odo, I think you have a bizare definition of intimidated. By my definition I've seen you intimidated several times. "Nervousness" to the degree that it gives you pause in the context of a fight, real or for sport, is tantamount to "intimidated". I used to be intimidated regularly by Baldar when...

Bottom line is that rhinos really aren't a big deal. Just keep hitting them until they die. True 95% of the time. What about the rare ones that have achieved enough skill that you simply can't hit them again and again or beat them into submission? Perhaps they only need shrug off 1 or 2 mighty blow...

I'm a little surprized people won't cop to being intimidated at least on one or two ocasions. There is no dishonor in that. In fact to me being intimidated and not letting it own you is one of the more critical growth experiences of martial arts. If you never face anyone that can make you pause for ...
