I just did my first work in .072 thickness of 6-4. I have 3/4 of one cuise done and it was a lot of work to say the least. I had to break the cuise down into smaller pieces for shaping which is a period thing to do but unfortunately I didn't plan ahead enough to get a really authentic design (wouldn...

I have also used Aveloc's coronel style tips. They look way cool and do stick nicely. I sometimes use fiber tape and then tool dip over that. My weapons don't look nearly as cool as Aveloc's but better than most. My tool-dipped foam poleaxes finally died after about 2.5 years of heavy use. The littl...

Asbjorn points out a good point about the kidneys... they are slightly higher generaslly than the bellybutton, which is not where most marshals seem to think. My own "kidney protection" goes much higher than the typical "kidney belt" but it just barely covers my kidneys. I actually measured it that ...

Thanks guys! It was a long list being double elim with each round 2 out of 3. Fortunately that kinda worked in my favor. Also the finals and semifinals were rotating weapons styles which I can't complain about. Earl Gregory is a very tough fight. I was lucky enough to win our sword and shield bout a...

Yeah, I should have mentioned the "slipperiness" benefit. It's nice but I wouldn't say that it's as nice as the heat reduction. Then again I live down here in the swamp.

Thanks a lot for all the comments guys, very helpful! This is what I'll be doing, if I've understood Dalewyn's post correctly: I'll be sure to post photos of the final product. That's basically what I do with the seatbelt webbing a...

The skin tight stuff is the only stuff to bother with. You'll get what seems like a size too small, it should take a little work to get it off and on. Then it helps with heat and the compression even helps reduce bruising and reduce muslce strains. The Wallmart knockoffs are not as good as "the real...

Things to consider: Make sure you have the right metal. It should be .090 or thicker and should be T6. Second, you can easily curve alluminum. So go for it, that one reason to use it over wood since curving wood is more complex. You CAN cover the surface with canvas but you don't have to. You can pa...

Very cool idea. Are you posting items of combat or is the combat to be in the style of a crown list? Regards Kane If I understand your question correctly, the answer is that we will be doing standard SCA rules of combat, not counted blows or somesuch. You going to Pennsic? If so then you should tak...

Re: Critique
Based on my experience, throwing blows with heavy weapons is more similar to using a Judo throw, rather than a Karate strike. In the Judo throw, the abdomenal region moves to rigidity as soon as possible in the technique, to provide a "transmission link" between the lower and upper body, adding pow...

I want to get the word out that the Passage of Three Seas won't be starting until Saturday the 13th. Basically since Baldar is going back to join the Iraq War again this summer for 4 months it has messed up his vacation plans and now he only has one week for Pennsic. He suggested we start without hi...

When I get that question I watch them and try to come up with just one thing or perhaps two that will help. I figure a fighter can't really process or remember much more than that anyway when in armour. Usually it's not "this is what you are doing wrong." it's "Try doing this for a while." or "See i...

I must respectfully disagree with one point Animal. Good armour does not cost a lot of money. Good armour can be had for a minimal investment, provided you are willing to go with a simple harness and spend a lot of time and effort making most of it yourself and do scrounging at scrap yards and plac...

#2 without reservation. Anyone with a credit card can have an awesome kit just sitting at home shopping ebay these days. I choose to make my own armour whenever I can because even if it isn't as nice as others, it's something I worked at. Likewise prowess is something I have earned. No genetics or m...

I remember my knight complaining frequently that he'd go to practice, suit up and no one would approach him to fight. That happens to me fairly often. Sometimes I suggest we do "king of the hill". Sometimes I suggest we do "bull in the ring" (sort of a round robin thing). Other times I'll go out ri...

First, there's no reason not to have a "buttspike" on your one-handed spear. Actual spikes were rare or at best unusual historically but they didn't need to have a spike in order to stab effectively. Our rule say we do. I see the "butt spike" on my spear not as a representation of an actual spike, b...

Yeah, and another problem w/ most practices or events is that a lot of people can't fight all day because they have to quit, which means someone who can handle it doesn't get any more training that day. . Yeah, I hate that. Also, on a side note, if you think about it, a knight will have the advanta...

It does tend to cause a return to the basics, and eliminating the unneccessary. While it can carry a person a certain distance, I think it would in general, not carry the person all the way to the finish. Well said. I'm not actually advocating being tired as a tool for tourney success. I think idea...

Wow. Will Baldar be in Pas-appropriate gear? Inspiring. http://houseasgard.com/asgardpic/people3/bg.jpg Heh. As much so as you can expect from a Viking; mail shirt, etc... His shirt is too short in arms and body and that will soon be remedied. He just came back from a live steel Viking event last w...

The Three Seas Passage of Arms
Here is the description that will hopefully be in the Pennsic book: Three Seas Passage In honor of the 20th year of the kingdom of Trimaris, King Baldar Longstider and Crown Prince Gaston de Vieuxchamps intend a passage of arms to begin on Friday August 12th. Baldar and Gaston will take the field at...

Of course, if you condition yourself through aerobic conditioning and weight training, you don't get tirec. I have to disagree. I think you should get tired no matter what your level of condition or else you aren't fighting enough. I've recently been hitting the gym quite a bit in order to rehab fr...

Fighting tired.(SCA)
I was just reading some other threads and the discussion of power and stance in the "what are we doing wroing?" thread and this came to me. I've always been a proponent of fighting tired. Rather than quit when you start to drag, I've always felt it was a good idea to keep fighting. Of course you get...
