With a fencing mask and a cup, a shinai isn't going to inflict anything more than minor pain, which is useful for training purposes, though most of your commercially available shinai are far to light to simulate anything realistically, IMHO. Without a mask, this borders on being Darwin award materi...

This was one of the matte ones. (This was about two years ago or so) The gentle who owned it did return it and Baldars did very quickly ship him a new one which he still used. I've seen most of the ones returned and the longest crack I've seen is about 1.5". By "near the middle" do you mean near wh...

As you probably knoe, Baldar and I are planning a passage of our own for this Pennsic. It will be done in honor of Trimaris's 20th anniversary. Finally he read the thread and I sat down with him and talked about it. We want to help you in any way we can. We will be starting our pas on the12th of Aug...

You can pretty much play by any rules you want if you are careful about who you play with. When I was young we used to fight with rebar and laugh our asses off the whole time, especially when someone blocked a hard shot and both people jumped up and down from the pain of vibration in their hands. La...

I don't like using the black plastic ones. I came to this after I saw one split open from one edge to near the middle on a meduim-strength shot. Maybe it was a defect but I just don't trust them. Beyond that I find them too light. It should be returned to the manufacturer. Some have come back crack...

Heh, everyone is right. They are ugly but mostly unobtrusive, that's why we only have black and some find shiny metal even more offensive. In many ways they are much safer than any other hilts. They absorb a lot of shock which is good for the joints. If you punch someone with them they do a lot less...

Use a heat gun. Flame and plastic bad for the plastic. You want to get the plastic in a softened state but not melting. Lay the plastic on your form and gentle heat it with the gun. Use your GLOVED hands to start the forming and work it an area at a time. You can also make some simple tools from wo...

Hi there! Jeff called and told me I was being paged. Just finished final exams. I still browse AA ocasionally but mostly the combat area. Sir Geoffery had a dishing press originally belonging to Wolf's Head armoury (now defunct?) and from that concept he made one for himself and then I made mine whi...

Duke Gaston, I agree with your chosen tactic. Last night I used a 6' glaive and was quite successful as long as I kept him at least 5' away from me. It's hard to do that while fighting sword-and-shield. Hey, it worked. I don't think either side has won the GW champion's battle by that large of a ma...

Since I was there and slightly involved in the design and testing of the Baldar cuphilts.... I don't really think the flat black plastic looks any worse than the huge ugly barstock hilts. Neither is even remotely "period" but I find the Baldar hilts less obtrusive. My tendons and joints sure like th...

PS That's a katana Tarquin is using. It goes with his Japanese armour. Just ignore the sugarloaf helm and it will all make sense. That's kinda hard to do. It's a nice, bright, shiny sugarloaf and totally jarring. Also, shouldn't he get a Japanese name? Anyway, I watched that guy mess up some good s...

I use and teach a loose start, crack at the end sort of grip like logan mentioned. I don't use a trigger but I have used one before and it worked pretty well. I'm sure your PT already covered this but just in case (ya never know)... Make sure to do a lot of hanstring strengthening, even after you return to fighting. In this interpretation, the spear is the predominant weapon (which is why it is used first), while grappling with the dagger is the weapon of last resort. That would be a reasonable position if translations of many of the texts were not available. The whole grappling in armour issue is probably a l...

I firmly believe, "Any style is better than no style." Here's my long-winded justification. The thing is that SCA fighting is still pretty primitive and there is still room for people to create new styles, usually by applying some principles from something they learned elsewhere. Boxing, karate, jud...

Murdock - Bastard Swords by Meridian Rule must be 48 inches or less, thus are considered single handed weapons. Are you actually saying that in Meridies a weapon used in two hands isn't a two-handed weapon unless it's longer than 48"? Why? And who cares if it's a "bastard sword" (not even a period ...

Dave, I can't imagine never thrusting in the real world. Every martial art I've ever see has thrusts even with "blunt" weapons. Having thrusts in the arsenal just makes sense regardless of the weapon. There was a time when cops could thrust with their billyclubs, now it's considered too dangerous. I...
