This thread is getting informative. Nothing in favor of any fighting lawsuits and now letters against from the likes of Finvarr and Bri. Looking pretty bad for the "sued all the time" argument.

This thread really went downhill If all we did was training to mock-beat each other, it felt like sport. If we stopped and talked philosophy, chivalry, zen whatever, THAT is when it crosses over into Martial Art. That's pretty much exactly what I was trying to say a few dozen posts ago. Why does thi...

The PC answer is to say that I would hate it without the "history" but I've never been known for being PC. I got into this game to fight at a time when I was on forced hiatus from karate and a buddy of mine was fighting in the SCA. I didn't realize people took the history seriously until later (not ...

No one is "testing the waters" for a lawsuit or anything absurdly paranoid like that. If people are going to say there are lawsuits, they should be able to have examples. I know of two. Neither has anything to do with fighting liability at all. Someone went so far as to say, "we get sued all the tim...

Sir Axel listed blade length but everyone else was using overall length. A longer handle might make a difference especially if you counterweight (I do not). Overall length works well for comparisson unless you are one of the few that leaves a long butt on your sword for protecting your arm/wrist. 28...

There is one but I cannot remember all the details. It had to do with some guy who was not allowed to make coinage and coerce merchants into using it as legal tender. Watts. I believe in a distinction between "martial art" and "martil sport" but it has nothing to do with leathality. I spent many years as a "traditional" martial artist and never heard anyone relate the distinction to leathality. I agree that SCA fighting is generally a "martial sport"--like boxing, fenci...

Counted blows received is no more period than what we do now. I disagree. Counted blows recieved may not be an actual period combat style, but it's certainly a lot closer than the "Monty Python Black Knight" rules we currently use. I look at it this way, if the only place you can hit your opponent is the shin, then you probably dont deserve to win the fight. Or maybe you don't deserve to win the fight if you can't defend your shins. Seriously, I think it would add a lot to the game and be great "game balance wise" but I also ...

Re: [SCA] Historical Techniques - Shield Pressing to the Bod

Technique - -Allow combatants to place their shield against the body or limbs of the opponent to block movement or, by pushing, to displace. Again, we did this perfectly safely in the SCA for decades before certain marshals got uptight about it. Planting a shield edge firmly on the inside of the op...
