What time period are van dykes associated with? Early 17th Century English & 1950's Beatnick And 1990's/early 21c general wear. I think Giuliana would lose her mind if I shaved my face clean. Not that I want to. I thought you had a goatee... Ah well. Ya know, you gotta surprise the wife now and the...

Ya - most facial hair in the late medieval period art is on elderly men. We have 3 guys with beards that I'd like to see shaven, but at least they are very short-trimmed and not some other historically-associated styles like van-Dykes or such. You could also point out hair styles as non-period. Idea...

There are factors you can do something about, and factors you can't. No group I know would exclude people from the group for any physical reason, but I don't think it unrealistic of a group to expect the person to make their portrayal as close as possible a realistic depiction of what a person with ...

I think one of hte things we do (or did) was use pewter as the direct plate, rather than using the pewter with something between it and the food, as they did here during the colonial times on down.. [ignorant question] What do you mean by "something between it and the food"? What "something" did th...

The Bayeux tapestry has a cooking scene with two grills/braziers. A pot is on the first, a grill seems to be on the second, and in the background, with an array of spits on which various meats. Much better than squatting over a fire!

Do you really think it's ethical to refuse people who have a physical disability, a tattoo, or something else in the name of authenticity? Are you really educating anybody--least of all yourselves? If your goal is to present to the public a picture that is as close as possible to the way things wer...

I recall the woman James mentioned earlier (shudder). I'm all for the unsupported look (in non-period venues), but only for certain women. When the boobs are being supported where the blouse is tucked in at the waist, their friends and loved ones to suggest alternative clothing selections. Not "offe...

Mord, Char's a member of the SCA. Has been for a long time. Do you think she goes to events and teaches classes (insert plug for her two classes at Sapphire joust this weekend) merely to gather information and spy for LH? Do you thing that she'd do that for an organization she loathes? She has an ob...

425-450F. You want to use a high heat and burn the oil to a nice blac, but not set it on fire. And use a Light coat of oil. A heavy coat cakes. Almost any oil works too. If you use vegatable or another plant oil like linseed, you can do it on a flat sheet in the oven or bbq grill. (removing the batt...

Lord Grey's Retinue does not allow glasses in camp during public hours. Quite so. Our standards are pretty strict, and getting tighter. Our plan is to get a basic set of generic medieval clothing and turn out with several groups that we think are good prospects for joining. After our little "tour" ...

Oh so it really is a secret. Yep... Actually, we'll certainly post what's going on here. But the actual decision making will likely happen internal to Grey's. Many of our members are not on the archive. I just don't know the answer to Chef's inqueries yet. Planning is at a real early stage. Usually...

No Jeff, we arent REALLY in period. As I said, in the context of the medieval hobbies we enjoy. And I guess having your minions fight for you would be kida the same as hiding behind a computer screen. Oh well. Some things never change I guess. Exactly! that's the thing - the context . If someone pe...

Jeff, You still don't sound convinced. How about you give Gethin the benefit of the doubt and take his words for what they are rather than trying to twist them into something nefarious? Nope - I'm convinced. Really Really REALLY convinced. Gethin is a man among men, a gentleman par excellance, a pa...

Just an observation here, but given the fact that this is a martial hobby I dont see why people get offended when someone offers combat as a way to settle an argument or at least establish a common ground of respect by which to build further good will upon. In the time periods that we portray it se...

I think what Jeff (and I until I read your last post) missed was the _why_ behind the challenge. Precisely. Perhaps the failing is on my part for having missed an important part of the history behind this thread. If you are looking to educate rather than issue a beating, then I applaud the approach.

Is this how it comes off to you? I had hoped that my wording would not lead anyone to that conclusion. The offer for the bout using (as much as we can, given that it is an S.C.A event) historical techniques was intended to entice Josh. He has shown his interest in bringing historical accuracy onto ...
