What time period are van dykes associated with? Early 17th Century English & 1950's Beatnick And 1990's/early 21c general wear. I think Giuliana would lose her mind if I shaved my face clean. Not that I want to. I thought you had a goatee... Ah well. Ya know, you gotta surprise the wife now and the...

Ya - most facial hair in the late medieval period art is on elderly men. We have 3 guys with beards that I'd like to see shaven, but at least they are very short-trimmed and not some other historically-associated styles like van-Dykes or such. You could also point out hair styles as non-period. Idea...

There are factors you can do something about, and factors you can't. No group I know would exclude people from the group for any physical reason, but I don't think it unrealistic of a group to expect the person to make their portrayal as close as possible a realistic depiction of what a person with ...

I think one of hte things we do (or did) was use pewter as the direct plate, rather than using the pewter with something between it and the food, as they did here during the colonial times on down.. The Bayeux tapestry has a cooking scene with two grills/braziers. A pot is on the first, a grill seems to be on the second, and in the background, with an array of spits on which various meats. Much better than squatting over a fire!

I recall the woman James mentioned earlier (shudder). I'm all for the unsupported look (in non-period venues), but only for certain women. Lord Grey's Retinue does not allow glasses in camp during public hours. Quite so. Our standards are pretty strict, and getting tighter. Are you planning to gesso the surface first? Painting on such rough surfaces isn't going to give a very smooth finish, and in most cases, they'd apply and sand down multiple layers of gesso to smooth it out. Gesso is a plaster made of rabbit-skin glue and gypsum.

It means you put a sort of cloth belt around the inside the waist of the garment and stitch the pleats to that. This gives permanent pleats without the use of an external belt.

Perhaps the failing is on my part for having missed an important part of the history behind this thread. If you are looking to educate rather than issue a beating, then I applaud the approach.
