It's not period (so you didn't hear it from me) Atom Wax from most leather suppliers. Next time, use an oil dye.

You should stay in the 15th C. It's a wonderful place to be.

The pic Gwyneth posted:

That doesn't look like a regular cross lacing. Look how the lines don't stay straight where they cross - as if they interact at the intersection. Maybe a little twist right there?

What ARE you saying Chuck!? :?

Good point on the wool, Char. Wool didn't always mean scratchy - there are fine wools that are outright silky.

IIInnnteresting. Brent is a true research guru.

Regarding the original question, I see colored braes, but no brae-chausse/hosen-color matching. It's the usual medieval polychromapalooza of colors, where modern sensibilitties would go for complementary or matching colors.

Huh? As far as I know, Braes (linen underwear) are universally white through the 14th & 15th C. Chauses & hosen are usually colored wool.

Yeah but waht about the shoulders? Should you still point them through the mail? Shoulder plate pieces - Spaulders and pauldrons, often ought point very close to the base of the neck. Either point through maile there or don't. It depends on the mail collar, or lack thereof. Your mileage may vary

Edward, Why do you want to point the gambeson through the maille ??? I'm not exactly tracking with what you're trying to accomplish. I point to the gambeson to hold the arms up so they don't slip down as my arms move. Works pretty well actually! I still want to point to the gambeson when there's Ma...

Conor -- I'd like to offer a thought. The very title of this thread is a concept we often see: "Authenticity vs. fun". I maintain that's a FALSE analogy. Authenticity and Fun aren't even on the same bar. It's "Authenticity vs. Inauthenticy" and "Fun vs. No fun." You can be authentic and have fun, a...

I thought the Knights templar were pretty strict about adherance to the dress of the order. The whole bit about co-mingling scottish, eastern & templar sounds Ahistorical (a polite word for "Fantasy").

Ditto about modern materiial blends. Linen & wool are superior.
