On my personal impressions, Hastings was good, but by no means a "time travel" experience. Too much waiting for cues, holding back, limited target areas (no head, arm, lower leg blows), Couldn't have been holding back too much, a friend came back with a broken bone in his shoulder from a saxon spear.

True, that sort of activity and numbers likely gives a sense of time travel, but I'm thinking it's more accurate & easier & to achieve when the equipment is accurate. That sort of effect is hard to achieve with the numbers US medieval reenactors muster. Euro reenactors, though... I've had friends at...

I feel that those who pursue prowess or experience brotherhood at arms in the SCA have learned something applicable to medieval culture, whatever the quality of their armor. Huh? But how is that inherently Medieval? I would suspect the soldiers in every combat back to pre-history considered themsel...

Re: Material vs. Context

Without context, there can be no true understanding of whatever is being studied. One cannot understand the how fully, without understanding the thought process in part behind it, and the society that created it (this, as an aside, you know I consider to be one of the weakest points in HWMA amongst...

Re: Various

I'm with Russ on this. You can learn more about the period doing what they were doing in the way they were doing it in blue jeans and a t-shirt than you can participating in modern activities and modern conversation in a very fine hand-stitched garment or immaculate harness. Sure, you can go throug...

Reenactors who wish to make public presentations for 'education' darned well ought to know a whole lot more about what they are presenting than most do, most reenactors are 'shiney bits' people, and no nothing more than the small objects of their obsession. Even the best of the euro-groups have their issues. I'm on a listserv for the company that we often hold as the shining example for our period and they have many of the same issues we have.
