Chronicalers aside, think of the practical aspects of social structure and survivability. Firstly, if your livelyhood is directly tied to the man you support, then in battle, you protect hym, and you stay with him. When you fight mixed mele, with the wealthier higher-ranked in good armor backed up b...

Snaebjorn, Understood. Some people have access to extensive libraries, or have learning disabilities, or have issues with pattern recognition, and the people here do cut a lot of slack. They won't be ignored. OK, that's one guy. There is one in every crowd - regardless of activity or subject. But wi...

Re: A modest proposal
Put at least a modicum of effort towards researching the topic you ask about. Fer gawds sake, become at least mildly acquainted in the topic before coming here and asking. I think your one exception to this rule is "Point me to authors/books about Subject Y". See, that's what I'm thinking...

I like the brass and bronze spoons sold by Anshelm Arms: I think he's looking for better-documented items. None of these would vet for reenactor groups. How about brass plates? I found 2 Brass chargers on Ebay for $20... Should I buy them? Brass plates? Not well documented as ceramics and pewter, a...

Well, you have one source... Not knowing Einard's, do you feel that a reliable source? And, does it apply to any time or place outside of the Franks?

I'm pretty certain the lock plate and the iron straps are later additions. Why not just make the hinges metal in the first place if you're going to use metal? You make wooden hinges if you are making it inexpensive and you don't care much about security. The staple loop in front is also a likely en ...

What is the hook looking thing for on the back? my guess is it's a odd hinge to supplement the wooden hinge. I think the 'hook' is a staple that lets the link slide down when the chest is opened I'm thinking it's for security. Someone could easily pry on the lid and pop, or cut or pry out and repla...

Jeff, I can source the iron. As regards the process, do you think it's easier to have the iron made and then make the box to dimension or to do it the other way around--make the box and then make the iron for the box? I would approach it from making the box first and then making the iron fittings, ...

Man, this is some kind of awesome, though, isn't it? Hopefully (and seriously), sometime mid to late next year - INCLUDING a fancy front lock plate? Actually, that's probably a more realistic date. The locks are pretty much the last thing that'd be needed, so there's lots of slack in the schedule f...
