I would give each person so many days of wages. At least in two of the instances of such forces gathering from the town I have been studying it would appear as though two men were put in charge of paying the expenses of the men but beyond that it doesn't give much of a hint how the system worked. Isn't that "ad equisinem"?

Depends on the venue. If this is an SCA event of just for personal fun, (which this seems to be), then there's no issue wearing things like belt favors. (If it's for fun could wear a Barney costume for all it matters). If he's presenting to the public as "Historical" then he probably shoul...

We talked about the minting of additional coinage at Ironwood's over the weekend, and it's looking like a doable undertaking. We'll need to figure exchange rate between denominations for Chef's coinage and what he's making. I had suggested hammered pennies, as it seems more of a common-use "dol...

Not at all... if oval it is, oval it is... But, if I had some options... I'd prefer something different. Oval's pretty useful. You can paint it pretty kewl if you want unusual. The some of the Italian City-states had some wild designs. There are also some cool pavaises, if you'd rather go for shape...

From what period? For most of the medieval span, I'm with Karen. We put our kids in white linen shirts and wool G63/64s. And it helps that the original was actually child-sized to begin with.

I invest time, materials in the SCA because I want to improve it. I’m an engineer – I fix things. I know that I’ll never make a huge dent in the monolith that is the SCA, but if I set an example by creating reproduction material goods and using them well, If I teach people how to do things bet...

Re: Why invest in the SCA?

You get out of the SCA what you put into it, why should anyone GIVE you anything? This comment by Halvgrim brought up a question in my mind. Why should those of us on the outskirts of the SCA who are not invested in the SCA system invest in it. Why should we take time away from our personal pursuit...

Patterns as you're probably used to seing them don't work for 14th & 15th Century dresses. They have to be fit to the body. My wife could discuss this far better than I, but she's out of town this weekend. Here are a couple of links:

Can't answer (A), aside from generally not recalling seeing them as common finds before the 16th century. I would consider bucklers with projections kinda dangerous for sparring use, though. Remember, Tahlhoffer has all sorts of funky-shaped stuff for dueling, so you may not find much elsewhere, or ...

Grain products can also be used as a storage medium. There have been experiments with heavy-crusted meatpies that demonstrated that the crust effectively acted as a seal on the pie to prevent the meat from spoiling. And then there's pickling, and other jar-storage techniques like in-ground cooling b...
