Roots are not leaves, stems or flowers. Plastic armor has roots in courboulle and steel armor, but it's still plastic. See the diff? Harem dances were not done in public by decent women in the towns. They were done by--ummm, rentable women, until that was outlawed, then by boys until they too became...

Whatever she does, please don't let her wander around in public in her dance clothes. Those are "private" garments. What they waore in public covered a heck of a lot more. Even if she wears the real costume, not the exposed navel getup, a woman covered things in front of strangers, from absolutely e...

Originally, the law that women in excess of 200 pounds must wear skimpy clothing in public was enforced as a civic improvement measure under King Ickfreid the Third. The idea was to warn the population against both sloth and gluttony. Unfotunately, it backfired when these ladies proved to be actuall...

As far as his majesty getting his ban accepted with as much or as little fuss as there may have been, perhaps it's a matter of not what was done but how it was presented. People tend to throw tantrums and scream when things are forced down their throats. Express the ban with a sense of humor or whim...

Exactly. Deal gently with your newbies, or you will A. drive them off and B. reinforce the sour reputation authenticity tends to acquire. If she had said, "Oh, that's pretty. I'm beading a gown right now, too--much later period, of course, but look at the pattern. I took it from this picture..." The...

My first brush with the (authenticity) police, or How not to

I'm a freak. I actually like to read. I'd rather read than go out and get high. This makes me incomprehensible (a word most of my peers cannot spell or understand). Nobody asks me out because I actually want to talk and won't have sex. So I'm alone a lot. I'm in my mid-twenties and working in a rest...

The point was made several times that there was a reason why newbies are attracted to the Plastic Paladins-that visceral appeal of cheap booze, violent conquest and possible access to scantily-clad, inebriated and promiscuous bedmates. What do we offer in return? Well, we know, but all the greeting ...

What we did have was the desire to do a 15th century impression, and the drive and will to go forward and make it happen. I funded my first harness in large part by selling off other hobby related items, by painting miniatures for people, and by scrimping and saving to come up with the required sum ...

Wolf Argent and Red Company are very fortunate in many respects. They have individuals with the resources to maintain their standards. I have yet to see any truly period garb donated to the local barony's "poor box", and I know very few folk willing to go to that effort for charity. Also, although t...

Nice thing is that in the SCA, we can set our own minimums. If you don't do better than sweat pants, whose fault is that? If you do better, who gets the credit? Would be more attractive to the general populace if we made it look like fun, though, and stopped sneering at people. And don't say we don'...

Actually, I have a pair of pants I bought for ten dollars at an event. Not the most period, but better than sweat pants, and about the same price. Also, they're not hard to make, just two rectangles and a diamond sewn together. I understand the hose glitch--not easy to make yourself, not cheap to buy.

There are a great many good ideas here--raise the minimum standard at least a little, retain visible plastic and duct tape to practice, jury merchants, write better beginner's guides. I especialy like idea of dinging Sir Kydex. Certainly a Peer should be held to higher standards. Keep in mind while ...

Because no sensible person with real-world responsibilities want to spend $500+ on gear until he knows if he likes it or not. How many fighters quit after the first year because they found something else they'd rather spend the time and money on? Isn't it better to have cheap ugly gear that they can...

How would it be possible to be on the field of battle, with weapons in play all about you, and not fight? Even a determined bodyguard would fail at some point. Surely everyone on a battlefield must be considered a combatant, and surely all combatants fight.

I did what the ancestors would do--I looked at a picture of what I wanted to make and reconstructed it as best I could. Simplicity Patterns hadn't been invented yet. Most of us do, if not bloomers then track shorts or something. In this climate it's necessary. Even with layers of petticoats, winter gets unpleasant and summer is difficult. Which is why I tended to think more than a few women in period wore something as well, it's just that what we wore was--well,...
