What bothers me are the fighters that decide I thought the shot was light and ramp it up. Nevermind that the shot was not light but glancy, or tippy, or hit my shield... Throwing harder isn't going to change the fact that you hit my sword or shield, but it might end up hurting me if I don't block t...

There is a certain Duke here - whom I respect, admire, and like as a person - who has the *most* irritating habit of chatting at you when you hit him in a melee. On the other side of the coin, Duke Christian once yelled at me when I tried to ask him about a blow he landed on me in a Crown Tourney b...

Look at it this way: are you annoyed that you can't use your hands in soccer? Or than in basketball, you can't tackle the guy who has the ball? Neither soccer nor basketball claims to be inspired by another sport. SCA armored combat does. I dislike a lot of things about rattan fighting--no grapplin...

Re: New Videos for your critiques please.
I worked on not backing up. It sucked. I only watched two of the fights, the one with Saveric and the one with Magnus. Two quick comments: Leaning back when your opponent closes is the same as backing up -- worse, because you compromise your center. Notice the stance of both knights just before the...

What if these were made like Chausses only they stopped below the knee? ... regardless of that 'working' would it be overall too un-period? Granted there may have been something similar in period, I've not taken any time to look... Take a look in the lower right-hand corner where the seated knight ...

Watching Sean one-shot Lorel reminded me that all of my contact information for the (aparently) aging duke is sadly out-of-date. Is there someone here that can help me reconnect? At the least, please feel free to pass on my email, cheval at courageux dot net. With thanks in advance, Alfred of Carlyl...

Aaron, I checked out your video, and while there were no strikes on the forestep, all of your backstep-driven blows were executed with the power-side foot stationary. This is the optimal power train, and is consistent with my suspicion posted above. If the low, horizontal stance is typical of your s...

I agree with Corby. Even a retreat should be an effort to turn a flank and gain the tempo necessary to force your opponent onto the backstep. Anything else surrenders a significant advantage to the advancing fighter. As far as Aaron's observations, I would ask this: When advancing, do you try to str...

Gavin, Western culture does imbue the new fighter with a sense of responsibility to participate in Crown. Eyvandr captured it perfectly -- it is the privilege and obligation of every fighter to be a part of the Crucible from which our rightful King emerges. Athestan, you forgot the additional attend...

with the current proposal i dont see why someone cant put a cooler of water bottles out and let people grab an unopened bottle. or even one of those 5gal water coolers and some paper cups. if this is the way it goes i would have no issue grabbing a couple of bottles and taking them to the res point...

Someone will be put in charge of it for events but it won't be an office or what not. It is just a matter of not letting it get lost in the shuffle. As I understand the policy, this would be disallowed. Any formal organization of waterbearing by the sponsors creates a liability. They cannot, for ex...

I guess i disagree... Yes, but the details of your post are mostly in agreement with Logan's position. He argues for personal responsibility; you are the very archtype. What Logan fails to account for is that waterbearing has been a contributory element to our melees without apparent detriment for ...

In my experience, hanging cruisses from the side of the hip causes them to rotate as you walk, causing significant pain in the knees. Using an attachment point at the front of the hip is perfectly fine. No discomfort at all, no rotation while walking. This needs its own thread, but I'll disagree wi...

Gemini was wearing a cdf at Crown this weekend as a sun hat. I've always appreciated the look, and seeing him with it has inspired me to see about getting my own. Can anyone recommend a nice one out there for a 13th C. look? Note this is not for SCA combat; LH quality preferred. With thanks in advan...

Providing water would almost certainly fall under a food service activity... There is *no* significant difference between waterbearing and serving feasts in terms of liability. You are providing a substance for consumption. I disagree with this assessment as a matter of tort, though the insurer may...

Those should definitely be covered. For your opponents eye protection...hehe Yeah, you sure wouldn't want to get poked in the occular with one of those. In fact, maybe we ought to mandate additional ducttape for moobs over a certain cup size (so long as they already pass the padding requirement for...
