What bothers me are the fighters that decide I thought the shot was light and ramp it up. Nevermind that the shot was not light but glancy, or tippy, or hit my shield... Throwing harder isn't going to change the fact that you hit my sword or shield, but it might end up hurting me if I don't block t...

There is nothing to assume. The only thing I need to know is they didn't take the shot. I don't care why.

There is a certain Duke here - whom I respect, admire, and like as a person - who has the *most* irritating habit of chatting at you when you hit him in a melee. On the other side of the coin, Duke Christian once yelled at me when I tried to ask him about a blow he landed on me in a Crown Tourney b...

The only thing I say is no when my opponent takes a shot on himself I think isn't good enough and to not take it. Sorry, Leo (and Angus), but I gotta weigh in on this one. There are no "backsies" in SCA fighting. Telling a fighter a blow wasn't good enough is the same as trying to tell hi...

Look at it this way: are you annoyed that you can't use your hands in soccer? Or than in basketball, you can't tackle the guy who has the ball? Neither soccer nor basketball claims to be inspired by another sport. SCA armored combat does. I dislike a lot of things about rattan fighting--no grapplin...

Re: New Videos for your critiques please.

I worked on not backing up. It sucked. I only watched two of the fights, the one with Saveric and the one with Magnus. Two quick comments: Leaning back when your opponent closes is the same as backing up -- worse, because you compromise your center. Notice the stance of both knights just before the...

I'm still new to the society and fighting. (About 6 months in) I guess the allure of strapping on my hideous armor and clonking around with the guys (and girls) hasn't worn off yet, so I'd probably fight standing on my head if I had to. It was not intended as a "catch", believe me. I star...

nothing we do is realistic. nothing. You're making the "Best" the enemy of the "Good" here, Logan. Depending on your premise (I'm entitled, Max inserted his earlier ), what we do can be seen as a very reasonable approximation of any number of non-lethal medieval martial games. T...

Aaron, I checked out your video, and while there were no strikes on the forestep, all of your backstep-driven blows were executed with the power-side foot stationary. This is the optimal power train, and is consistent with my suspicion posted above. If the low, horizontal stance is typical of your s...

I agree with Corby. Even a retreat should be an effort to turn a flank and gain the tempo necessary to force your opponent onto the backstep. Anything else surrenders a significant advantage to the advancing fighter. As far as Aaron's observations, I would ask this: When advancing, do you try to str...

Someone will be put in charge of it for events but it won't be an office or what not. It is just a matter of not letting it get lost in the shuffle. In my experience, hanging cruisses from the side of the hip causes them to rotate as you walk, causing significant pain in the knees.
