why do you assume that when the standard clearly states "helm" and not "cap" that it is a cap? While not trying to answer for JP, I used to lean toward the "Norman nasal" interpretation for two reasons: First, mail dominates the armor of the warrior elite from the fall of Rome to the early 14th C. ...

Thrusting to other areas of the head need not be accepted as a telling blow. Fighters shall not deliberately thrust to the side or back of the head. Fighters shall not deliberately turn their heads to attempt to nullify an otherwise legal thrust. I can appreciate your interest in clarifying the rul...

Thats looks like a ring belt, get belt furniture from HE or Revival or so. And medieval it up. Another great source I discovered at Estrella was Blackwood Jewelry (m). He has really nice belt furniture for very reasonable prices (the only bronze version of the thistle buckle I know). Here's an exam...

You'll have to check with him for current pricing, but I have a set of elbows and knees from Adam Berry/White Mountain Armoury that are very similar to: m (I used the HE link because Adam has moved the creased version onto his "custom" page and the image is very small) They are stainless so, while n...

Carlyle's story is awesome and humbling. It is very "death of John Chandos" ! Funny you should say that. I recounted the same story last night at practice, and a friend of mine made the exact same observation. Are you sure you're not a Western duke in disguise ? That was such an interesting place t...

Currently in the Middle the text of the Society targeting rules ... states that the head is proof from thrusts... Perhaps the SEM has made a ruling and not updated his site? Or is this a typo in our rules? Clear as mud, isn't it ? Too many rules. Way too much talking about the rules. Not nearly eno...

Jamie -- It's the phrase, "...shall not be thrown...", that trips me up. This implies that the attacker is potentially subject to sanction for his conduct. Re-writing the rule to read, "Thrusts to the top, side, or back of the helm shall not be counted", completely turns it into a statement of "proo...

Well then I guess we are lucky that you dont get to interpret our Kingdom rules then. Eric's final words may be poorly chosen, but I would agree that a literal reading of the rule posted appears to place the onus on the attacker and, without actually saying as much, declares the target "illegal". T...

Robyn is all of 4'6" (139cm). I know, since I was corrected when I suggested she was taller (somebody even broke out a calculator)... Truth be told, I privately advised against accepting Mike's generous offer; as even he admitted, I thought this was beyond his demonstrated skill. I have clearly been...

I think _we_ innately take (or expect) a spear or thrust to be harder than an equivalent shot from say, a broad or bastard sword. I think we're on the same page. The actual total energy transmitted is probably greater than from any other weapon. But if I were to hazard a guess, I suspect it's becau...

...i dont have concerns with their safety just their place in our sport. That's an interesting comment, considering your position on the "sport" versus "reality" argument. As a sport, I would much rather see the rules distilled to the point where a fighter doesn't have to "interpret" different cali...

During the town battle, the West fought at the breaches just below the resurrection point. Though wielding spear, I often found myself in the front ranks of the lower breach. At one point, an opposing knight had placed himself at a disadvantage and, intent on demonstrating the error of his ways, I t...

Had another clown with a greatsword that decided a 270 degree arc with a greatsword was wayy too cool ( found him and "discussed" the issue the next battle). OK, I'll bite -- was the blow excessive and attributed to the arc of travel, or was it just the "big swing" that got your attention? While I ...

Sarnac makes a valid distinction. As practiced in the West, our "plate is proof" rule wrt combat archery encourages the fighter to actively turn or interpose plate-defended targets into the attack. Archers are not discouraged from hitting the plate; the simply know that the resulting hit will be dis...

Don't tell me the SCA hasn't changed in the last five years. The greatest significance to me is that all of the participants are unbelted. I will leave the final accounting to Baccus, for he has earned that honor; but suffice it to say that the last eight bouts I witnessed (gathered with many other attendant knights and men-at-arms at the behest of His Majesty Radnor) were as hard fought as the first. Why eight, you might ask? Let's ju...

(SCA) Broadsword balance
I've recently had some very interesting discussions with some of our top fighters here, and I thought I'd throw it out to this forum to get your feedback. For background, a long time ago in the Middle Kingdom I started building my rattan batons with pipe caps "pommels". At first, it was because it w...

He says steel combat in his initial post. What is your deal, dude? It's actually a fair question. I've learned through direct experience that many UK re-enactors practice "steel combat" to prepare for their reenactment events. Their rules of engagement, however, are much like the SCA's. They are en...

Brendan -- Doesn't this only work if your opponent brings his sword forward to guard the top of the head? What if he doesn't allow the initial hit-and-pin? Is their a technique to draw him into that line? Or is their a strong alternative for "legged" oponents who keep their sword back? Curious... AoC
