Thanks! Yeah, I took NO pics at MTA and Jeff avoided being in any that I've seen. These were taken at 11;30 pm while up late finishing it! I should get him into the backyard to pose.

That makes sense. When and if the hemp shell starts wearing through at the abrasion points, I expect the additional layers will also keep the batting from "leaking." Yep. I also used historically achievable colors for my inner layers, at least the ones toward the outer shell, in case of a...

Not too shabby, sister. I'll try to sit down and read your LJ saga this weekend when I find my spare brain. What do you find are the advantages of adding those extra layers of linen sandwiching your batting? I generally just do shell, batting, and liner. Klaus It's kind of an earlier version of the...

Arming Cote based on the Charles de Blois Pourpoint

Hello! I've not been posting too much lately, mostly because I've been sewing like a madwoman. I finished an arming cote for Jeff, just in time for MTA last weekend. It still has a lot of work to be completely finished, but it was wearable, and worked fine for the weekend. I've documented the entire...

Yeah... I was afraid of that. How late could she possibly go? If she were being unfashionable, I think she could go to the middle of the 15th century. Maybe even the later 1400s; I can check the brasses collection on my home computer and at least let you know if that type of pious dress is seen pas...

Assuming, once again, that those are somewhat long pointy tassets, they would be later than the 1430's. And what's with his hair?! That doesn't look right at all even for 1430. Doesn't make a lot of sense, I know... The actual effigy would be critical, here. Maybe it would be better to look at Marg...

Had Charlotte J not raised the point that I was using too much trim in my tunics (of which I was proud), I would not have been able to move past that and attain a new level of accuracy. However, in the 13th (I think?) and earlier 14th centuries there's a garment that is like a cloak with HUGE hanging sleeves, but also open armholes, that people might wear for warmth. Of course, now I can't remember what people call them. All I can think of is "garderobe", but that's &quo...

Speaking of cloaks, while in Seagirt, I seen a Lady's cloak(I believe it was Russian?) with "arm slits" so the Lady didn't have to open the cloak in cool weather. Don I don't have an exhaustive list of 14th c. cloaks, but I don't recall seeing anything like that for that period. However, ...

That is *really* gorgeous, both the materials and the graceful execution. Now I have to add one more thing to my list of items to compose a 14th C. wardrobe. Some pictures of Jeff's are here. These were tests for my next version - I didn't get enough padding in them, and the armholes were a bit too deep. But you get the idea of how close you can get it to fit (and this was my first one - I'm no expert on this fit!).

Actually, you can get a very good fit with the CdB pourpoint, without tons of bunching everywhere. But I make my own patterns and do my own fittings. Jeff has very little bunching anywhere on his, and has full motion. It's not perfect, but it's not a lot of fabric either. Don't go based on measureme...

You're cutting on the bias, right? Even if the measurement itself doesn't fit when you lay it out, it might stretch to fit. Whenever I make hosen, I make them generously sized, and then pin as I sew, especially through the ankles. Pin it well, put it on and take it off. If you can do it, pin it tigh...

Spiff!

As for the turned out slits, could you leave the extra fabric in there, but then not tack them down? I like the idea of having that bit that can flap open naturally, but I've always seen that as depicting a natural fall of the fabric.
