Re: A fine event
A lovely site, decent weather, hospitable people, good wine, good cheer, fine fighting. The threat of bad weather or muddy field probably kept some people away, which, I imagine, actually made for more fun. The largest threat to the success of a Pas is to be doomed by too much popularity. I don't m...

I have to agree with Norman about the historical aspects of what the Apprentice/Master relationship is in regard to Guilds/Fraternities. You learn the same craft, so I can see why that would be confusing to have an apprentice learning a different craft. Oh, yeah, I see Norman's point. But that's no...

I have three kids' clothes links on this page: m The most appropriate thing for a baby of that size is to swaddle her, but not all babies want to be swaddled, or swaddled while they're awake. Otherwise, I dressed the boys in a plain linen shirt, and a pretty simple gown. I used the Herjolfsness gown...

How a Boy Shall be Dressed at his Ease
My son, Henry, age four, dressed in the style of the 15th century, from the skin out (no un-toward nudity). Oh, and he still likes wearing "dresses" as he calls them. He loves "camping" and therefore loves the "re'nacting clothes" that go with them. We start with braies...

So he is aprenticed in SCA-politics? Then the laurel is not a craft mastery but a mastery in SCA-politics? From an historical point of view, I completely understand what you're saying. We also tend to take grown adults as apprentices, as well, not young impressionable kids wanting to learn a trade....

Better yet: m You really can't go wrong getting them from Gwen. These have a bit of stretch to them, and you'll be able to move quite well. That'll help with fit, too. If they seem expensive, think about how much time you'll save not dealing with sewing, when you've never sewn before. You've said th...

All the Laurels I know are highly skilled in their area of preference and usually demonstrate competency in a variety of fields. I don't know a single one (in my own kingdom at least) who doesn't have the skill level to deserve the elevation. I know Jeff took down his comment, but I do want to expl...

Tournament of the Lily Pictures
Hey mods, if this belongs in OT better, please move it. This weekend, the Barony of Ponte Alto in the Kingdom of Atlantia, held the The Tournament of the Lily , a 15th c. themed Pas d'Armes. I think this event was one of the highest concentrations of well-dressed, common period attendees. This was a...

bblack flannel is from www.bblackandsons.com. It's great wool, and I recommend it for just about anything. Except that more than one person has had it blow out on them. I will be buying wool from LH type people at G Street Fabrics. There might be a few LH people working at G-street, but it's not a store that specifically caters to reenactors. When do you need these? While G street occasionally has sales, they're not usually the cheapest option. Flittie has probabl...

Are you using bblack and sons wool flannel? They always rip out in the crotch. Reinforce that area well. Don't just do one row of stitches and call it good. A general rule of thumb - the closer the seam is to your joint, the better it will move. So if it's not right up against your body, it's going ...

James -- crepe isn't a knit; it's a weave made of threads that are unevenly spun, which gives it the knobbly appearance that it's known for. I'm not a textile expert so I'm not certain why it's so verboten, but I suppose someone who has studied the topic more might be able to cite why the unevenly ...

This is somewhat off the topic, but what sort of wool should I be looking for in order to make a cotehardie/GFD? I *really* want to do a skin-out outfit appropriate to that timeframe, with a linen-lined wool dress. I figure the wool should be lighter weight, but I don't know what terminology to loo...

Ok, this is funny. It all comes full circle. That "fellow on the Medieval Woodworking list" was Jeff J, who was totally geeking out on the site after looking at www.larsdatter.com and searching deeper into some of the links.
