Take out the current rivets, put in new ones, and *then* try to deepen them a bit by beating them over a ball stake. They are pretty well made.
They are just a bit flat. Like someone stepped on them kinda flat. I don't know if this is something that happened over the years of previous use, or they were always this shallow.

I've seen shoulder straps done a number of different ways. Ultimately it depends on how much protection you want vs. how much mobility you need. I've seen mixed results with those. While they are designed to protect against those types of impact, they really aren't designed to protect repeatedly over a short time span.
I've seen them break in short order from repeated impact.
