Re: Rehab some guantlets? Worth the cost?
"Is it worth the cost?" Guess that depends on what people with the time and skills are asking. RIGHT! :) I just don't know what that cost would be. If it would be more than the cost of the perceived value of the Gauntlets, I will just cut my losses, resell them and move on. :) The needed shap...

Re: Rehab some guantlets? Worth the cost?
The nuts/bolts are the easy part really. You can drill them out fairly easily. Roofing nails are easy to come by and if you have a ball peen hammer, you can do the re-riveting yourself. Slight clarification here. I can do the re-reviting myself. I just don't want to. :) I would rather just pay some...

Re: Rehab some guantlets? Worth the cost?
Take out the current rivets, put in new ones, and *then* try to deepen them a bit by beating them over a ball stake. A little will probably be OK, but going too deep will necessitate moving the rivet holes-which means welding them closed first. More trouble than its worth, IMO. Oddly enough, most t...

They are pretty well made.
They are just a bit flat. Like someone stepped on them kinda flat. I don't know if this is something that happened over the years of previous use, or they were always this shallow.

Rehab some guantlets? Worth the cost?
So I picked up a pair of stainless steel mitten gauntlets used. They look to be pretty decent, there are just a couple concerns I have. 1. Half the articulation rivets are nuts and bolts peened closed, they work fine but I don't like the look. 2. The guantlets are a bit shallow, I'd like them to be ...

Re: Henry VIII grotesque helm - latch details?
The hinges on either side of the mouth are a total mystery. They are certainly original, but their function can only be conjectured. I suppose that they must have borne a pair of hasps and hooks to secure a (now missing) reinforcing piece for the face. The form and extent of that theoretical compon...

Re: Period looking metal armour
Like with most things in the SCA, it all depends on quality of the piece and the "education" of the person looking at it. Some people can pick out aluminum and stainless at 30 paces just at a glance. No matter the amount of polish. Others can't. Some people look at the shape and make and can as the ...

If you look at all the other stuff he is selling, he is selling a "look" and not pricing for actual value.
He is selling to people who want to be Ann Rice Vampires and decorate their house like "ye olde Vampiry Estate".

Re: Kettle helm question
I think the attached mail drape thing is an SCAism to hide the cage and make the helm look more like a coif is worn under the kettle. I do remember seeing some evidence of coifs with bibs that stop right under the nose with Kettles though. But, basically I think it is a "continuation" on the use of ...

I've seen shoulder straps done a number of different ways. Ultimately it depends on how much protection you want vs. how much mobility you need. I've never really been a fan of the plates over the shoulders as straps. Just never worked out for me. What I found works fine is this: http://static.fastc...

I've seen mixed results with those. While they are designed to protect against those types of impact, they really aren't designed to protect repeatedly over a short time span.
I've seen them break in short order from repeated impact.

Re: Looking for (cheap) Plate Armor
I think your budget of $100 for full plate arms and legs is unrealistic. The issue with making armor is that it takes roughly the same amount of time and expertese to make 16ga SCA Legal full plate legs as it does to make 20ga full plate legs. To be completely honest, if you are looking to keep it t...

In your product description you first say that the helmet was constructed by Aesir Metalwyrks and later go on to say that you purchased the helmet from Windrose and had Aesir make you the replacement nasal. You may want to fix that. Why? Aesir used to work for Windrose, then went out on his own and...

What about just using a thicker weight linen?
I had a fighting tunic once made out of thick linen that lasted a long time. Much longer than the thinner ones.
