Re: Gauging interest (AR flattop upper)

Making the assumption that the barrel is a plain jane black 16" with a flash hider and a 2 piece plastic forarm guard, I'd say you are probably looking at about $200-$250. With no BCG or charging handle it is not a complete upper and unless you've got some upgraded parts, the only thing you have goi...

Depends on your kingdom.

These are illegal without padding in Calontir.

I think that is exactly how that was worn. Maybe the addition of a chainmaille standard, but other than that it is good to go.

The Dagorhir here said It couldn't be used because its not "period" metal. And as far as historical basis, I'm still working on the tracking down the actual origins of scale armor, which there is a pic of a roman statue wearing scales, just got to find a good picture of it. Re: WTB wooden curved heater blank

It is painted yes. Though some of the paint is flaking off. You might be able to strip it. It's blue with three stars on it. The stars are done in the Nautical star style with one part yellow and on part mettalic gold. Meh, as long as the canvas is secure, I will just paint over the top. I would ha...

It currently has 4 carriage bolts in it too, under the canvas. They'll pop right out once you take the canvas off.

Is the canvas painted?

I might just leave it on, it might be easier to just paint over the top.

WTB wooden curved heater blank

Anyone have one or can make one for a reasonable price? I'm painting a shield for a Friend's knighting, but I want to put it on a nice blank for show instead of putting it on his combat shield and it eventually destroyed. Just looked for a curved blank. Size can vary but I'm looking for something ab...

I'm assuming your main clientel are Fantasy based LARPers? For a LARP fantasy rig they look nice. But, for SCA combat, those speed rivets will fail in short order on the areas that get hit alot. I thought the same thing. I was considering assembling some scale myself with barrel-screws instead. Tho...

LOL, I can see where it looks like that. But, no, that is a center boss on the shield. The guy that wanted it, fights with a center grip shield. so, I had to paint the Raven over the existing boss. A PITA!! :)

The backing is T6061 Aluminum shield. I don't usually paint on a canvas backing.

Yes it is clear coated. Clear Gloss enamel. Just many many coats. Used a full can of spray on clear coat.

Another thing about the horns and chains. That model lends a "majestic/regal" look. A look of something/someone that does not engage in combat but emparts wisdom or other abilities that does not require dynamic movement. Practicality says that a "warrior" with all that hanging off his horns would ge...

Crazy Aiden's Custom Shields Emporium! UPDATED-5-28-13

So, just got another shield done for a buddy. He wanted a repro of a Byzantine Varangian Guard shield he saw in an Osprey Book. Normally I shy away from using Artistic renderings as documentation, but this time they actually got it sort of right. The Artists rendering is based on a period illustrati...

Re: Pheonix Dawn COP: Lanterns and Antlers!

I'm going to agree with Zachos. The horns just don't fit with your current aesthetic. EVERYTHING else on your rig is birdlike or inspired by a bird. The addition of Stag antlers is jarring. The addition of a bunch of stuff hanging off those antlers make the silhouette jumbled and unweildy. I would s...

It's really not inline with your time period. That helm is pretty much the same time period as the one you originally posted with no occulars. It is firmly in the pre 1066ad time frame.

You are correct, Oculars were not popular during 12th century Scotland, but seeing as how my other options (That are period) are a great helm (Claustrophobia anyone?) or a kettlehat (Which I hate the look of) or a typical Spangen helm (Without the ocular) but I need something to attach the aventail...

Requisites for helm: Exceed minimum SCA standards. Barbute, Sallet, Close-helm, Burgonet, or Armet style. (supplemental bar/grill okay, but would prefer perforated visors or something more historically accurate) 24" inch at the brow, and have room for a period liner. I can't help on the rest, but I...

Re: Looking to Buy/Make Helm

1. If you like the spangenhelm with occulars, just change your persona to "viking". Otherwise, yes that helm is not even remotely close to being believable for a 12th cent. Scott. 2. You should be able to get a spangen with occulars for under $400 pretty easy. The added weave will cost more, and dep...
