I think it really all depends on what you want to get out of your activity. It has been stated time and again that LH(living history) and the SCA are not the same. So, what do YOU want to do, because the answers for each are different. If you want to do the SCA I would contact your local group and t...

did they point the trues to a belt or were they pointed to something else? I have been wondering if Trews and braes were period for Irismen of the 10th cent. My guess is that they were either held up with a draw string or had belt loops. They differ considerably from braies of the period. Trews see...

do you think that the vulnerability of the construction of the weapons we were using could have something to do with this outcome? (using conduit core on both, padded with closed cell foam, and 5/8" nylon rope instead of chain on the ksarigama. Poll-axe head is cored with leather then closed cell f...

I tried the leine for a while, but because of my body build (rather bulky :) I kept snagging my leine every time I sat down and I kept tearing the bottom edge on things. So, I have opted for pants. Not really period but my persona is more soldiery than nobley. (like my highly edumacated terms :) )

leaving the "skin" on the rattan will prolong its use.
Stripped or shaved rattan will dry out sooner than skin on rattan.

I think some of it has to do with the "pagan/druidish" monichar that early celts and Picts get harnessed with and all that "Dungeons and Dragons" play. What I Mean is alot of people graduate from DnD to SCA and still have that "I want to be a tattooed pict barbarian that weilds 2 scimitars with ring...

I agree with Robin, in the end it is a judgement call by the marshal.

All I was saying is that a small amount of glue to fasten down a mace head or axe head would not send my sensors off when inspecting the weapon.

A very Heavy weapon or stout weapon sure would though.

Interesting, I never thought about partially incasing my arm to my shield. Does that go all the way to your elbow? Your hand protection will have to be folded closer to your hand so I sword can't get in there. How heavy is the shield? I am unfamiliar with oriental designs is that a period shape?

"the rattan shaft of a mace head is not the striking surface, the mace is. So, a wedge would be legal." I have to disagree here just as you can't core out a rattan stick and fill it with an Ironwood dowel you can't alter the blade/head of a rattan weapon note my use of area rather then surface. and...

"What about wedges like a hammer or flaring the end such that it must be slid up from the bottom. It sounds like a problem that has been solved before for other applications. Trystan:
Deliberate shots to the knee or ANY kind are Illegal. If he had done it on purpose, he should have been removed from the battle immediately.

But, ussually shots like that are not thrown on purpose, he was more likely aiming for your thigh. But, he needs better control over his weapon.

looks like a good design to me. make sure to have clean welds. are you planning on riveting/welding the grill to the outside or edge of the cheek plates? If it is the edge you might have some problems with some marshals, unless the welds are nice and substantial. Other than that, make sure the gaps ...
