Splinter, I went to your site (arena joust). From what I can tell you only have 3 "knights". Apparently this "arena joust" is new as well correct? you are not even scheduled to do any events before 2005? Yet you are wanting to expand on a show/product that is not proven yet? what kind of "knights" a...

Vitus, I am making some assumptions here, so forgive me. I assume this will be for SCA combat: If so, allow me to give some information, not advice, on how certian mediums act in certian situations. Egg yoke tempra. This medium, while extremely period, might not yield the longevity for your shield y...

If I were you madyn I would paint the whole shield. The amount of paint you will save will be inconsiquental and the amount of time you will spend in up keep will multiply. painting the shield with gesso, not only seals the shield but it acts as a stiffening agent, effectively strengthening the canv...

I use a "workable fixative" sprayed on the shield. It allows me to re-position the cloth to get it just right. Plus not adding alot of weight to the shield. I also use heavy duck cloth or other tight weave fabric. You want to use as tight a weave as you can find. The looser the weave the more "absor...

Glen, You say the SCA's inclusivity is bad. You say our "lack of standards" is a problem. You say that the SCA teaches those new, about the SCA and NOT Medieval Europe. You say these things make the SCA bad. I say you are right. I also say that those same things are also some of our STRONGEST points...

Sure it dead guard is headed off the field and you give your xbow to him, then yes that would be ok. BUT if dead guard is dead and waiting around for the time when you might need to hand the xbow off to him then I would say no. Also if you planned on running off feild to retrieve xbow from dead guar...

I would say no more than 5 oz leather unless it is very supple to the touch. Although IMHO leather is not the best choice for longevity. Canvas or heavy Duck cloth is a better choice. When a rivet pulls through leather you have 2 choices to repair it. 1. put a washer on the rivet(this can sometimes ...

If you are in an archery unit and you run out of bolts or need to take up a guard spot due to dead guards, how are you going to get the X-bow off the field? Are you planning on giving it to a dead guard? If so, why is said dead guard still on the field? I would assume that as soon as you give Xbow t...

Re: On the Ideology and Practical use of Florintine
First off, let me say i do not know much about SCA combat, but I do know and consider myself an expert with boffer. Sure call it kids stuff or whatever, but what we do is not the normal boffer. Our weapons are period looking, but our styles.. well that is entirely differant and we fight in extremes...

As far as I know, there are not really any rules religating "florintene" style in "full combat". Are you meaning "full combat" to be melee or Tourney? If melee usually Florintene fighters are scirmishers. Guys who engage main units to slow them down. Period weapons to use would be 6ft spear and swor...

Looking for Catapult/Trebuchet/Onager Patterns
I guy in our local group is very involved with our local "renn fair" (last year was the first one and about 8,000 people showed up ) Anway, he want to make some catapults/trebuchet/onagers to shoot water ballons out of for the kiddies. He asked me if I could help him track down some patterns. We are...

right individuals can be/having religous icons and what not, they just can't go around "forcing" that religion on others. I once wanted to do a "war Priest" complete with big red robes and flat red hat. I was going to go around on the battle feild and "kill" the legged opponents. I was going to perf...

this we agree on Flonzy, no pre cut off date is silly too. I don't like to see aztec warriors or Zulu warriors running around either. Now Romans, while not period don't detract from the list IMHO most of the time the guys who portray romans work harder to make a good looking kit, than some of us who...

I hate to do this and am not completely certian about portraying a religous figure BUT the SCA has to steer clear of religous icons/events/proceedings so they won't exclude anyone. But you might be able to portray a monk. Just don't flash the cross at anyone or try to bless anyone without their perm...

Really I want to hear one good reason for not allowing Musketeers besides the current cut off date. People in the 17th century wore armor, more that is SCA legal than Vikings. Flonzy There shouldn't have to be another reason other than it is against the rules. Just like no exposed modern items is a...

Ya know Flonzy, coming from a LH group I would think that you would applaud those of us who are trying to play the "rules" set down by the governing body of the SCA. I mean you LH guys are fanatical about rules. But thank you for bringing up the SCA's short commings Yet again. Yes we have vikings (w...
