the weight differance will be 90% because of the differance in thickness, there is little differance in weight of differnt steels at the same thickness.

in progress, and looking for ideas valsgarde#5 helm

Working on a helm based on the Valsgarde #5. Have the top other than the woven panels roughed out, and a roughed out face plate. Now trying to figure out what to do for the occulars and cheek plates. So through your ideas and photo shop skills into the mix. http://members.armourarchive.org/knitebee/...

I wish I could find it again, there was an article online about some SCA guys that did a boar hunt with medieval tpe spears. Its not a brig but what most call a corrinzia, a ridgid breastplate split up the front. I've been studying that painting as I want to recreat the armour in it, I've got one shoulder partially done.

shorten the knuckle plates and dish them deeper. As they are they cover great but when you make a fist the edges stick out to catch on things. shorter and deeper and they will sit fairly flush all the time. Along the same lines the back edge of the finger tip plates offten had a small turned down li...

Thanks Klaus. I thought it did, but the last two people (one armourer and one jouster) I talked to about such a thing vehemently denounced it, citing armour bite from the two overlapping plates. Me, I think it would better protect from the point of a blade being able to find its way between the two...

before using any water resistant treatment set it up and hose it down with water. Water will cause the fibers to swell closing up much of the pores in the canvas. You missed Hocktide on the south end of the kingdom earlier this year, it was turned into an equestrian event that also had heavy and rapier fighting. Horses going right next to camps and all. If this was our standard then it would be nothing but a rich mans game. Those who could afford plate would be the winners. However, cotton fibers, when wet (read: sweaty) will swell. This makes you sweat more, since the skin can no longer breathe as well. I suggest and highly recommend using linen or wool for your padding. Neither of these fiber swell when wet. I switched to a wool padded linen gambeson early this year...

the outside are sliding rivets, the middle of the front though has a leather strap behind it, it attaches at the bottom edge of each piece and the rivet is set flush in a counter sunk hole in the front of each lame, because the rivet sets behind the top of the next lame down.

I used olive oil the two times I've done such a finish, one coat over the fresh plumb brown was enough to keep it from rusting. For the russetted finish where it was allowed to rust first, it took about 4-5 aplications buffed on with fine steel wool (removes the loose rust particles).

brownwells plumb brown leaves a copper sheen is applied on room temp mild. You have to oil it IMEDIATELY or it will rust. Or allow it to rust then wax and buff tell the rust in neutrilaized and you'll have a bronzish finish.
