Not an answer here but a precaution. I tried to dull some alumin mail in some ferric chloride a few years back. NOT, I repeat NOT a good idea. Within seconds the acid was boiling fromt he heat of the reaction (not just air bubles but boiling hot boiling), and put off a nice little mushroom cloud of ...

Eventually this is my dream as well. However, starting the jousting co is taking precidence over my dream SCA harness and the jousting armor is more expensive. I think mine would hold up to jousting, the bascinet is raised from a welded cone of 18g and the great helm is 12g sides and 10g top. Later...

one thing that Adrian Empire has in there rules on it that I'd sugest adding. Not only is it with prior discusion of the fighters involved but also of the marshal. If the marshal doesn't feel the fighters can do it safely or if the marshal doesn't feel qualified to insure safety through the match wi...

turn two pieces of leather inside out draw out the device you want, sew enough of it together that you can turn it right side out and stuff with batting before sewwing shut. Attack that to something that mounts to your helm. For my helm the skull cap is made of fiberglass molded to the helm then cov...

First as allready mentioned more hammer hits going concentrically from the outside. Your first ring of hits should be at the most hammer head distance from the edge of the metal and your blows should be far closer together (ie. each new blow at least partially overlapped with the previous blow). Sec...

have the first one basically finished, wore it for a tourney then let it get rusty . Fit is awsome, didn't bind, pinch or move on me at all, and kept the demi greave of my leg harness from digging in. Love it, must get the other one finished now then start a new set based of leasons learned on this ...

When I make a piece and wear it and there is a hinderance to my fighting, I wonder what I did wrong in the making of the piece. What did I do in its shape or manufacture to make it not operate as it should. Properly made, properly fitting armour should only limit you 10-15%. My personal thoughts ar...

knowing people in ECS and Adrian groupls here in the states that fight with steel weapons, they typically find us in the SCA to be crazy. They use steel weapons at full speed but put very little if any power behind the blows. SCA is full speed and much of the time as much power as possible. Taking t...

You've done a great job fitting the halves together and putting in some difficult and subtle curves. How are you going to hinge it? Do you have some good pictures of the Chartres greaves? Some effigies from the era you're working on? I think both will steer you to a less exaggerated bulge over the ...

18g mild steel, being made to go wtih my late 14c kit. knitebee thats makes total sence, yes it is late.. much to late for heavy fighting i understand but for rapier or somthing of that nature i dont understand how it wouldnt be respected. Because it is still 200 years too late. They had body armor in the US Civil War, and WWI. Why wouldn't that be all...

many may disagree with me.............. For me I would much preffer to see something done right past the cut off date than I would another generic SCA kit. A kit like you posted pictures off is a far cry better than plastic armour and sports gear that is so common. Ya its to late to be in SCAs time ...

What I've done in simular situations is to sew a thinner liner that fits the head proper then added a padded ring around it where it sews in at the brow. Ps, thought you where going to go padded coif, mail then suspension in the helm, otherwise I would have added a leather strip around the bottom fo...

The lowest lame now is attached via a slot articulation to the vambrace ...
