Since you've done it, I guess we'll see. I would suggest, and I use this for my horse tack, is Durenamel - an epoxy-based enamel painted on that must be cooked at approx. 150 degrees or so for 20 - 40 minutes. Rio Grande sells it. It doesn't crack like glass and adheres like appliance paint. Plus, y...

Anglo-Saxon Getelds

Geforthan Strandi posted this picture of Regia's camp recently. I remember someone asking what getelds looked like, there are several here.

I think you have to do it as wire, once it is woven, you won't get even distribution. Galvanization only wears off quickly in acid rain down-wind of a chemical plant. It oxidizes and turns grey, but you can toss it into (someone else's) dryer and it is spiff. I've got butted maille that is 10 years ...

I see the same thing in the Midrealm. We attend 2 events a year, and generally have on a new outfit, whether armour or garb, due to the fact we have researched in the interm and replaced or improved what we have. But we see the same SCAdians wearing the same polyester garb, the same duct-taped plast...

Microsoft Internet Express, or whatever @home.com uses. I just hit properties on the blanks, then pasted the URL, looked at the picture, and now the computer remembers it in its "temporary files". The second half meant I don't unerstand the purpose of putting a faceplate on a "Norman skull cap" with...

I decided to bring out the watered steel in a scramsaex blade I had been working on. I knew steel neutralizes muratic acid pretty quick, so I tried my nitric for silver solution. Put on the full-face mask and laid that puppy in there. Ran for my life from the cloud that immediately formed. Grabbed t...

Not SCA, but funny none the less. One of the guys in the live steel group showed up and proudly showed off his new flail, a solid iron handle with a ring welded on the end connected to the chain, and a big iron ball welded to the chain on the other end. The problem was, the chain was about 2" shorte...

Nah, beeswax sucks. You can use epoxy. I tried the bolo things, too. They suck. I wound up buying about 3 doz. of the ones with brass tips from Black Swan. Occasionally they catch when you pull them out (wide first, then narrow), but never going in. The bolo things get caught in the wool, and there ...

I'm having trouble visualizing this: I have had pommels break, but I have never seen a sword break at the hilt. A trick I find useful is to leave the tang extra-wide and then hammer the end of the tang into a rude cylinder or rod. If you then thread the tang, I am convinced the pommel will not come ...

Idëval, What group do you fight with? How heavy are these swords? I'll buy the mild steel argument when you are talking about hitting with force, as the edge mushrooms and they don't shatter. KOT got into "Steel Wars", with spring steel, chrome and nickel content, and we had a lot of problems with ...

When I was in The Knights of Trinity, a goofy Renn. Faire group, one of the "knights" took off his steel gauntlets because (in a whiny voice) "They're too heavy..." He put on hockey gloves and proceeded to fight another "knight" with 2-handed mass weapons, one was an axe, one was a mace. These were ...
