I wear mine over a padded gambeson that has points for lacing the arms & shoulders to. I've come off my horse a lot without any problems with the BREASTPLATE. Now the faulds sometimes look like a cat fight in the venetian blinds. Occasionally I'll flatten a pauldron or upper cannon of the arm when I...

How big are you? Height, weight, trunky or leggy? What time period are you looking for? I have this harness in my living room: http://monsieurgeoffrey.faithweb.com/images/gtj1906.jpeg and it is a bit much for me. I'd sell it complete with your choice of the close helm, or the original armet/wrapper ...

Wow! I wish we could afford to go. The armoured tournament is the first time I've seen armour requirements I couldn't pass....the eyeslots have to have 1/4" open, 1/4" bar, 1/4"open, 1/4" bar, on a bascinet, with only 1/2" high. You might bear this in mind, neither historical faceplates or SCA barca...

Nope, I've not found anything conclusive and I've been all over these books. (I am looking for an illustration of the swallow-tail chin strap on a Norman nasel.) "The Normans" shows the same guy from a different view as the other book. Once again, a flat topped "great helm" with a faceplate only is ...

Nope, I only have a picture scanner that pulls it inside and through. E-mail me your mailing address and I'll mail you a photo copy, it would be easier, and this is kind of a debatable interpretation that requires seeing. I still want one regardless of whether or not it was used as a underhelm, I in...

No, I don't think I do. However, I could post one in a couple of weeks if you'd like, as the 12' is mounted along the ceiling in a room I'm supposed to be painting last week. Since I don't know how much longer I can stall a redhead, I could probably take a shot of them next weekend when I start spac...

I found it! (Thanks to Glen K!) http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Cyprus/7530/Lance/ The way I made mine: I first made a 1 1/4" dia. 14' French calvary lance from fir dowel stock. I purchased (and paid WAY TOO MUCH) a vamplate from MacKenzie-Smith, and bought a leaf tip at a SCA event somewhere. Next,...

Jeez, sorry, no offense intended! I have only noticed lower back pain from wearing armour when my gut became bigger than my waist. The pull throws your spine out of line and with only one bad knee, always puts mine on the right side. The solution for me was running and trunk exercises. Perhaps your ...

There was a guy at Silverleaf about 6' but perhaps 200 lbs., and he paid $500.00 for his shirt from Germany. I'd get a price before you decide whether it's too expensive. The stainless links looked to be 5/16" ID and 18 guage. I thought it was beautiful. ------------------ Virtus vincit invidiam "Vi...

Most Christians in Northern Europe had tatoos of sorts - smallpox scars. Do you have any documentation of the ink used for tatooing was even available in Europe? Sounds like someone is fishing for a way of explaining modern self-mutilation as being period. Good luck. ------------------ Virtus vincit...

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Just curious, but what provenence can you provide that these caps were used under greathelms? I've certainly heard it proposed that early bascinets/skullcaps were used under heumes in the 14th C., but this is the first reference I've seen to a similar practice i...

I believe you'd mount a padded roll on this to support the great helm, which (in the case of the Pembridge helm) was fastened to the breastplate and backplate I 'believe' without a chin strap. I'd think this small helm would have to be laced or strapped to your head somehow, to keep the whole thing ...

All of my helmets except the one bascinet I used for the SCA are suspension-type consisting of pie-shaped pieces of leather with adjustable ties at the top, sewn to a leather band, either riveted on or in one case, sewn through holes drilled every 1/4" around the bottom edge. The chin strap, whether...

Vitus, Just got back from Michigan. That guy never came up with the $700.00 for the chainmaille, so we aren't going to be able to afford Pennsic this year. I did manage to parry a steel sword with my face, though that's another story. We will be at Kinser and at the Orange-peel Ball. ---------------...

I tried for years to do flint and steel. Went to Smoke & Fires' class at Pennsic one year too late, watched the guy help one little kid that couldn't figure it out with the class, went back to our campsite and lit a fire in 2 minutes.
