Having just moved I currently am not involved with any medieval groups, although The Knights of St. Denys have started nagging my butt to get it together. I still have to get a fence up for the rest of the pasture before I start setting up the quintain & rings. You are certainly welcome to come over...

A friend of nine and Alan Bauldri's handled some banded mail in a museum in Bagdad prior to the Kuwaiti invasion. He made a small sample using butted rings, but it was about 4 years ago that I looked at it, so I recall well enough to describe the process. Perhaps Alan remembers?

I had a subscription when it first came out. We had joined a Renn. Faire group, and I thought it was interesting to get the perspective that those folks had. And, no, they are not particularly interested in historically correct or authentic anything. These are the people who butcher Shakespeare whil...

I have never seen anyone responed to dukelogan or ..... that way. You've obviously never read any of my posts! I ordered rivited mail from India. The quality was good - about 4 bad links per shirt, the sizing was ridiculous - I ordered "SCA sizes" (XXL) or larger, and they barely fit on my frame in...

If you are planning on riding a horse in either with modern stirrups I'd suggest giving some thought to stiffness of the soles. Broken toes and strained tendons aren't worth the "authenticity factor", especially if your horse and tack aren't authentic as well. Remember you wear modern shoes every da...

Plastic is perfectly appropriate given the nature of the person involved and the priorities maintained by the LARP group he is an officer in. Now if he was a member of a historically based group, the standards would have been set higher, and plastic would not be an option.

The thing about the war kettle, is I am having trouble seeing where it was used by men of coat armour--bascinet is probably better for people planning on moving up in the world. I disagree - there is ample evidence for wearing kettle helmets with full harness. You need to look at more paintings and...

I use walnut oil for eating implements, although mineral or olive oil would also work. Boiled linseed for regular knife or sword handles, with lemon oil to keep it from drying out.

Bascot,

I think you are thinking of the Duke Logan video. We did have a fairly long thread discussion of it. He did NOT hit someone who was down, he hit a fighter who had been legged and was on his knees.

Respectfully,
Rob

Well I have no command of this "high speech", but I still have to say it is looking really good! I too, vote for the full greaves as appropriate to the rest of the harness. I can see why you want to shorten the sleeves of the haulberk, but don't go to high on the skirt that you open yourself up.

Suede isn't appropriate for pre-16th C..... The technology for mass-splitting of hides came later. You can split some hides by hand, but it would be easier to use a different type of hide or a younger animal for thinner leather.
