First, they were surrounded by wood, so they didn't have the fastination with real wood we have in our plastic throw-away society. Therefore, painting would be the obvious first choice. No finish at all was also common. Furniture was made within a week of being cut from the tree, and green wood (esp...

How many of you drive Hondas or Toyotas and then whine when your ox is gored? Far more jobs have been lost to electronic, automotive, appliance and clothing industries being imported then a few maille shirts, helmets and gauntlets for a hobby . With the poor service and lengthy waits for armour made...

What I do is starting with the Vikings, show a cutting sword and how it faced linen & wool (love those priests & monks!), then explain mailles' benefit at protection (riveted byrnie). Move on to full maille and the Crusades, with the need for face protection against the Sarecen bows. Then on to Crec...

Not wishing to flame Steve here, as he makes some beautiful haulberks. However, looks aren't strength. A British re-enactment group recently ran some tests using an air cannon & high speed video camera and published the results. The test examples were a round link pin rivet maille, a coif of Steve's...

Sorry you had bad experiences, but: First off, you are talking butted mail, not riveted. You need 14 G. 3/8" for butted to withstand its own weight, without SCA club-fighting. Authentic maille would be closer to 16 - 18 G. 1/4" to 5/16" ID. Secondly, you are talking SCA, which uses overly heavy guag...

I'd be interested if the price and convenience were there. I have thought about doing a Norse merchant, carrying riveted maille byrnies, spangenhelms, axes, swords & seaxes to go with my leather, Viking furniture and other woodwork. I need about six of each, and with certain modifications, so I migh...

We "sacked" Barak out with maille when he was one. You let him see you mess with it, you let him examine it, then you slowly try to touch him with it. Then you rub him all over. First, determine exactly what you want - 14th C. - complete wrap-around greaves or one piece over maille chauses. Coat-of-Plates, bascinet & overhelm, or pig-face visor & segmented globose breast plate? Full arms, or maille with besagews and gauntlets. Mild steel or stainless? The 14th C. went from ...

The Icelandic "pony", actually a small horse, is one of the few horses to remain relatively unchanged over the last 1000 years. Due to an isolated location, only a few modern breeds were introduced before the Icelanders realized what they had and passed laws only allowing the export of horses. These...

Spurs are one thing. Stirrups are another. Earlier period Romans didn't, but there is a great deal of debate about when stirrups were introduced. Perhaps the Hun invasions? By themselves, spurs add little to the military system that was to develop. Stirrups gave a man a fighting platform to work fro...

Henry the 8th had one that had removable pieces for mounted combat. It is, essentially, a skirt. It might be interesting in SCA misguided rules, as hitting it would not harm the person, but would follow the rules for a guige-strapped, attached shield. I predict arguments and nonsense at every differ...
