Re: Opinion on gauntlets

Hey, I'm thinking about making a pair of gauntlets, but can't decide of whether I should do round clam-shells, or the more square mitten looking ones. I'm not really trying to stick to a particular period, I'm just making them for weapon training and was wondering people's opinions such as the pro'...

Re: Future of SCA fighting

Isn't that completely counterintuitive according to the concerns of the adults over the light blades? Do youth combatants have more control or....what the hell is going on here? I thought this was a safety concern across the Society but kids can use them? I agree. Not safe for adults, but safe for ...

Re: To waiver or not to waiver?

(membership card.. some are white.. or were) Blue cards mean the home office has a sign waiver on file for you. White card means you are a member, but home office does NOT have a signed waiver on file. If you have a white card you STILL MUST sign the waiver at every event. Ahh.. right. Even though ...

Thanks to all the feedback. I guess going forward strangely most of what I had thought is pretty much confirmed. A) It may work for him. B) Make sure he can still move C) Make sure his weight isn't transferring excessively to the front foot. D) I'm not god, just cause I don't do it doesn't make it ...

Re: To waiver or not to waiver?

Does this include initialing a "sign in roster"? no. Roster and site waiver are two different things. the only exception I could think of, is if the site _itself_ requires a different waiver (Such as coopers) than the standard SCA waiver, which you agreed to with signing your blue card. (...

Re: SCA Combat Training: Flat Snap, foot position

And if you had your sword leg forward and threw the flat snap would you rotate both feet as you describe in the above for the offside recovery? Like I say, I do rotate, I just maintain a stable foot position. I may even have the ability to press into the ground with my feet (not something I do conc...

Re: SCA Combat Training: Flat Snap, foot position

I am new to this whole training deal. It's not something I have worked to become good at. It is something I am trying to correct, I believe it will benefit me and those around me. Last night I was doing slow work with a new fighter. Going through the flat snap with him. Basic from the shoulder, rot...

wow, those have got to be the biggest gauntlets I've ever seen! On Duke Balfar? Yeah. I still have a pair of em kicking around somewhere. Sir Ed Beerslayer used to make them (hence, beerclaws). They are simple to make, are barrel plastic, and are TANK.. the biggest problem with them is that cuff.. ...

protecting yourself from a blow to the head is not exactly an "ideal" it's a necessity. The ideals were chivalry and fighting for the honor of your lady. These are things that I have always done and will continue to do and yes they were the base that the SCA was formed under. Wasn't a nec...

Re: Ages of Rapier?

Dave and Ken had been working on reconstructing medieval foot combat since before there was an SCA. They did not start with any manuals, but they did encounter some along the way. And it's OK I am not suggesting that medieval manuals were not read or that there was no interest in them. I am just sa...

You know, I actually don't miss what feasts have become- show off events for some laurel's apprentice. Aaron, there is nothing stopping you from doing C&T with full armor and rebated steel. If you can find one other interested person you can do it in your backyard this afternoon. There's no reason to believe the SCA is the right venue for all forms of armed combat. If anything, the SCA already h...

*chuckle*. Corpora has been what it is, for at least 20 years. I don't really think it's a "new thing" there folks. In my experience, it's the people IN the sca moving it forward. Not the BOD (Well, inasmuch as the BOD is people in the SCA, after all). I'm sorry if this leaves some people ...
